Not yet!!! Got busy with other stuff. I did however locate a handful of the etched drawbars recently. I put them in a safe place which means I'll probably forget where I put them in a few weeks or when I need to find them. Ugh!!! This OldtimerZ sucks!!! LOL! Tim
Ok Tim getting ready to do some testing over Donner I think I will build a Long Runner first I did it the same way I did it in N scale using a brass bar and file:headspin: would be nice to have someone do some etched drawbars.........
Just a heads-up... I'm bumping this thread since I am going to mention it in the December 2014 UMTRR. The just-announced Runner Pack of APL Husky-Stack cars (to be delivered May 2015) could use this modification since the five cars represent one single five-unit set, specifically APLX 4837 which later became BRAN 4837.
Yeah, the MTL bodies can be carved into an articulated set by modifying the ends of the castings. BNSF had 5-unit articulated sets like BRAN, and that's what I turned my cars into:
Yup! I still have some of them! Ran across them a few months ago in a box of old brass etchings. Where you want them mailed? Just give me an address. 2 Frets? I think each fret has 6 or so drawbars!
Doug, I put 5 sets in the mail to you today! You should have them by Saturday if the wind is blowing right. Lately the USPS here has been slowing service on purpose according to one of the postal employees here that I talked to. Shocking! Hobo Tim
Bumping this thread again since I am going to mention it in the June 2016 UMTRR. The just-announced Runner Pack of SP Husky-Stack cars (to be delivered October 2015) could use this modification since the five cars represent one single five-unit set, specifically SP 513895.
The MTL runner pack #97 is Southern Pacific road number 513958 A, B, C, D, E and slated for November 2016 release. Frank Daniels z.scale.hobo
The SP is actually articulated versus drawbarred. So it needs Skibbe's treatment. So Mike, did you actually just carve the couplings out of the car "bar-of-soap style" or is that some type of etched or casted piece? It would be neat if we could get a conversion of sorts. I realize it might not be perfect but better than nothing.
I am not aware of any metal etched walkways ever having been made for the MTL wellcars. With the correct clamping tools and a Proxxon MF70 milling machine (or equivalent) the MTL wellcars can be easily machined like the wellcars shown above. A Dremel tool can be used, but you have to be ultra careful not to injure your fingers or mess up your work piece/wellcars. When Lajos Thek produced the SW-1 kit that used the 0-6-0 Marklin loco, I used a medium size file to remove the metal on the loco chassis. It took time but it worked. Just a note, I still have etched draw bars available if anyone wants to drawbar their MTL yellow TTX 48' Husky's!
While is may not look correct, can the truck be mounted in the middle of the drawbar? Depending on minimum radii, that drawbar could be even shorter.
Yep, just carved away with a Dremel and cut off disk. The only thing added was a bit of metal rod through the truck pin, in order to create a pin for mounting the next car.
Mike Skibbe posted this: Yeah, the MTL bodies can be carved into an articulated set by modifying the ends of the castings. BNSF had 5-unit articulated sets like BRAN, and that's what I turned my cars into: I wanted to repost this in the event new members to the Z scale community wanted to try their craftsmanship in modifying some MTL single 48' Gunderson's into a Maxi III set of 5!!!!
