KCS repainting executive F-units in original passenger train scheme

    October 23, 2007

SHREVEPORT, La. - Kansas City Southern has begun repainting its executive F-units in an exact recreation of the classic Kansas City Southern passenger diesel scheme of red, yellow, and Brunswick green. KCS passenger diesels wore the colors from the 1940s into the late 1960s, when an all-white scheme was adopted for both passenger and freight locomotives, although only a few passenger units received the white scheme prior to the end of passenger service in 1969. KCS painted the F40s used on its Panama Canal Railway in the historic colors, and last year painted an F unit it donated to Union Station in Kansas City in the scheme.

The first unit repainted was FP9 KCS-1, ex-VIA/CN No. 6504, built in London, Ont., at GMD in 1954. The black scheme formerly worn by the KCS F units was a new creation and not the original diesel scheme.

That new scheme looks way better than the previous one, and the previous wasn't half bad! Has to be one of the best heritage schemes ever!

As an old buddy of mine back in Arkansas would have said,

"Eeeeww- lookit them Fs!!" :D :D (FTR, he was an F-unit fan)

It's great to see this scheme come back :thumbs_up:

Even from the distance in the first photo you can see the huge smile on the engineer's face. Those are some really good looking locos.

That would probably be the conductor these days. In days of old the fireman sat there.

A little side note. The Southern Belle was actually owned and operated by the L&A (Louisiana and Arkansas) Railway, a subsidiary of the KCS.
