I'll use your thread to comment on our outage. The software that drives the forums (vBulletin) regularly releases updates. Most of them are small bug fixes and they are not really noticed by users. When I do these upgrades, it usually takes 10 minutes and if you don't visit during those 10 minutes, you never even know it happened.

This one was also a small one but it did something with the database that I did not expect. In doing so, another problem was created. Once realized, fixing was something that was over my head and we had to use professional help to get it straight.

    Obviously, this took 48 hours.

Sorry for the problem and thanks for your patience!

If you don't follow TrainBoard on Facebook, you might want to check there anytime there is an outage. We will explain it there.

Ain't technology great.....when it works like it is supposed to? My old UNIVAC 1 never did that. ;) Come to think of it, it never did a fraction of what modern internet servers do. But if a vacuum tube went out, I could always go down to Radio Shack and pick up a new one to replace it. Enough of my inane babbling.

Thanks, at least the withdrawal hallucinations are gone. What is amazing is how quickly the posts started back up.

Hey Russell, yeah, those 6BG6 and 5U4's came in handy, didn't they? I wonder if any of our younger members recognize those secret codes? Glad to see we are back in business.

Charlie, my deepest sympathies for I too have spent many similar hours pulling out hair as deadlines came and went with uninformed customer project managers screaming. Thank you for all you do, we definitely appreciate it.

Jim, don't forget those venerable 5881's (6L6WGB) and 6SN7's. All I can say as a fledging engineer was...thank the Lord for non-glowing filaments, they sure saved a lot of trouble-shooting time and helped us look like geniuses.

I know a couple of 6L6 tubes in the power stage of your guitar amp make it go to 11. Or so Marshall and Peavy have convinced me.

My sympathies. I didn't catch a trainboard update in my facebook feed. I'm gonna blame Mark Zuckerberg for that.

WHEW!!! Glad to see it back up and running on the rails. Kinda like a derailment, it takes 24 to 48 hours to clean up. In this case, it did take 48 hours to "clean up". Now I can get the RPOTW put up. :tb-wink:

Seeing vacuum tube part numbers has me thinking of digging out my old short wave radio. Hope it will still work. A kit I built in high school 45 years ago. Yikes.

Welcome back Trainboard, I will never take you for granted again!

When my brother passed away last fall, I had the honor of cleaning out his ham radio shack. I found a Hallicrafters SW receiver from 1946, complete with the manuals at the bottom of a pile of radios. That thing weights more than a Big Boy, but I can turn it on and heat my layout room from the tubes. My first radio kit was a 5 tube receiver in 10 grade electronics class.
R.I.P Don (aka WB0QGA), I miss you big brother.

Yeah, but they use solid state and microelectronic devices! Lets go for a vacuum tube design! (I know, would be larger than Univac!)

Don't you mean Griefkit? I built their first 2 meter HT kit back in the late 1970's. The thing did not work from the very start and my bro and I went crazy troubleshooting it. It was a doublesided board and some of the through holes that were suppose to conduct, didn't! Once we figured that out and proved it to Heathkit, they were very nice, they gave me another board! They wanted me to unsolder the components from one board and resolder it on the replacement. After much complaining, they gave me a new kit. That one worked well, for it's time. Nowadays, it is a brick! I can imagine what Heathkit would do with DCC, could you imagine soldering up a DZ-125 size decoder?
