Hehe, I'd be willing to bet a lot of us can hardly wait to see it completed, sitting on track, unpainted. Doug
Thanks. I put a quarter on the edge of my monitor as I hit (Ctrl minus) a few times. That is really impressive!
Hopefully in a few weeks you won’t be disappointed. I’m trying to get a few other projects finished up right now
Hi Aaron, great work - and a wonderful project!! Would like to see one of my favorite locos running in this scale...
I have the boiler drawn up ready to etch. I just haven’t had time to get it done. The cab is drawn and ready as well.
Work continues with the cab. The cab has NOT been assembled in the photos. The roof is just resting on the sides. I will etch the cab itself out of thicker brass. I had a spare piece in my drawer I used to make a quick etching. I etched window frames as well as the roof hatch. The boiler had been drawn but I still haven’t etched it yet. I’m the chef in the family so I have to start preparing for Thanksgiving.
Really nice. I've always liked the trademark slanted cab front on the As and Ys. It adds a touch of period "speedlining" that is so cool.
Overall I’m satisfied with the cab. Once it’s etched out of thicker brass it will be nice. The rivets will be nice and round, windows installed, all that good stuff. The roof was a little tricky to bend by hand. I’ll probably etch another one to do over. Fortunately the n&w used this cab style on a number of different engines so I can make use out of the same drawing.
Interresting project. As a chassis, wheelset and driving rods, what do you plan to use ? Full scratchbuilt ? Anyway the famous N&W Y6b is my absolute favourite steamer, so I will closely follow this thread in the future. Dom
Working on soldering the y6a tender together using my resistance soldering unit. Once it’s soldered all the fine tuning of shaping and shifting can happen.
I was listening to some of my old LP records of rail sounds, some of which were recorded by O. Winston Link. I extracted a short MP3 of a Y6 approaching Northfork, WV with beautiful whistle artistry. N&W whistles were so unique -- nothing like them anywhere else. I was going to add it here, but I don't think sound files can be uploaded. Your work continues to astound me!
I have the boiler etched. I’m not sure if I like the results. I’m thinking about redoing the drawing.
I made a new drawing for the boiler and have it printed. I hope to get it etched tonight now that the Christmas holiday has calmed down and I have a couple days off work. It will be a wrap that goes on a brass tube. I will have a few strips wrapped around the tube before the final wrap to make the shape of the boiler.
I’ve been working on the boiler. I’m just not happy with the wrap. I may have to etch it out of thicker brass to stop the kinks. Trial and error I suppose.
After etching the boiler out of thicker brass I’m pretty happy with the results. Obviously it’s not close to being finished but not bad for a starter piece.
