Looking at another scratch build. I have decided that the citizens of Playa Desnuda need a passenger shelter, and was guided to this structure. I am thinking about using a friend’s Cricut machine to make the end and center supports out of .020″ styrene. These passenger shelters were built around 1906 by the Los Angeles Pacific Railway, more commonly known as The Balloon Route. They had to have been one of last items built, due to the merger of the LAP into the Pacific Electric on March 19, 1906.
I mentioned this potential project elsewhere, and it was drawn up as a 3D print and is on sale over on Shapeways. https://www.shapeways.com/product/E9L29PRAJ/lapac-shelter-n-scale?optionId=69135099 I am going to buy a few of these when the hobby budget allows. This afternoon I was cleaning up my garage and came across an old kit that I forgot about... I think that I am going to build one for the time being...
Those are great little kits and a very reasonable stand in for a PE passenger shelter. The HO version has been around forever and I had one on my HO layout as a kid in the 1960's. I was happy to see Atlas release something similar in N.
John, Send me a message as soon as you can, be it any of your favorite locations, we need to discuss Shapeways, the Elegoo Mars 2, and the LAPAC shelter. It's a mixture of Bad news and Good news and I think quite possibly Great news if you want a pile of LAPAC Shelters but you didn't like Shapeways prices. I didn't like it any more than you did, and I'm the guy sitting on the other side of their three side pogo stick. If you know the color schemes, that would be useful. Yes, I drew it up about three years ago, after I saw the plan and thought it might be fun to draw (it was) and easy to print (also true.) And then Shapeways decided they couldn't print them anymore...le sigh...
I don't know if I've ever seen your cars painted and lettered ! Some interurbans built shelters that were more or less a blight on the countryside, The PE shelters looks well done. In the Milwaukee area they built these.
Long Story Short, Shapeways has decided they cannot print to their previous 0.3mm unsupported and 0.6mm supported standards and demanded we modelers move up to 0.8 supported and 1.0 unsupported.... So I bought an Elegoo Mars 2 and took my models and went home. The first attempt at the shelter came out beyond expectations. Now I have to figure out how I will print it to get consistent results that do not involve a half hour of cleanup each...
