You are right-but on the other hand there’s something I find almost romantic about well-weathered, hard working power. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-2 series, dynamic brakes, air conditioning, tunnel cooling configuration, and that snoot! It's got it all! Doug
Taken in 1961 by William T. Greenberg at Hainesburg, NJ a tired-looking Lehigh & New England freight rolls past the NYS&W depot under the DL&W's Paulinskill Viaduct. Just south of here, the L&NE connected with the NYS&W and used NYS&W rails about 18 miles north to Swartswood Jct. where the L&NE regained its own iron north. The L&NE shut down the same year this photo was taken. Without L&NE trains, the line had no purpose and the NYS&W removed it in 1963. Even the mighty DL&W's track would be removed in the early 1980s. While the viaduct still stands and some woodland trails can be found, railroading in the valley of the Paulins Kill has been quiet for 60 years.
Since she sports the original logo (without the thoroughbred head) it's most certainly her original livery.
In terrible light, here's today's Silver Star departing Columbia, SC 7-1/2 hours late at near noontime. Not sure what caused the delay. This is my first sighting of Amtrak's newfangled locomotives. They're currently running them trailing so as to give crews and service people familiarization.

Talk about terrible light - about 0530 in Libby MT, 2 of the new-fangled things on the front. EB Empire Builder. Later
Train number 8 at Whitefish, Montana, some years back. We had a great engineer that trip. Smooth and fast. He got us in early, after being late out of Spokane. I grabbed a quick shot before heading the few remaining miles to home.
