So I am trying to figure out what else I can place on the Hotel module, and it occurred to me that because I had to chop off half of the shop extension to the roundhouse, Why not add it to the Hotel module? Looking at this photo from up on the hill behind the yard, you can see how long the shop extension to the roundhouse was, and to the right of it is the hotel. Since I had to selectively compress the shop to fit the Depot module, maybe I can add part of it to the Hotel module, and shift everything else on it to the left. So I decided to make a half depth shop extension on a magnetic base that can fill that space. In order to add interest, there is a light, and an ATTiny85 programmed for welder with afterglow. Even though there is also a welder on the Depot module's shop extension, why could there not be 2 welders working at the same time? So here is what I am making: And here is where it is going. When I need to move the modules, I just move the shop extension out of the way first, then upon module setup, place it back, magnetically aligned. And since there is going to be a splice line visible, Maybe I can plant a tall pine to hide the splice?:
To hide the splice between my modules I use thin upholstery foam. It can be spray painted in the right colour and even sprinkled with dust, foliage or grass. If properly done makes splices almost disappear. I guess you could try to use the foam, complemented with some foliage to simulate some clinging ivy BTW congrats for the hotel, another masterpiece.
Maybe you don’t hide the splice but make it look like an extension built later? It’s kinda common for old buildings to be extended. Or as you said a tree could hide it.
Rob, I was thinking along the same lines as Joe, it just looks like an addition. The other suggestions will work as well. Nice work! Scott
I want to move on to the next structure, so I just did a quick tree and chalk powder blend of the old and new shop extension:
The HOTEL turned out really nice. The tree(s) do a nice job of blocking, as they were intended. Maybe a few more cars in the parking lot would pull the perspective over to the hotel. Just my $0.02 worth.
I don't even have the base scenery down. The Hotel is not mounted, only the shop extension in on it's base. After I get all the bases in, I will spray Great Stuff expanding foam, then plaster cloth, then base scenery, then the dirt road between the structures. I am almost done with the shed though. It's got the first color of paint on it: Here is it's rough placement on the module: Reference:
Well noted. Now that I see the shed (and the reference pic for that matter), I see you still have a little ways to go to complete the scene. Coming along nicely though.
It's a telegraph pole, the semaphore is one telegraph pole and 10 feet to the right, in front of the depot.
Today I made the base for the hotel and worked out placement for gluing down the hotel and shed: Then I glued down the bases. You can see the magnetic mounting points, and well as where the pogo pins will make electrical contact. These structures will be held down quite strong, strong enough to compress the spring loaded pogo pins into a reliable electrical connection as well as good alignment: And I finished drawing up the parts for the little house next to the hotel. I included a picket fence all around the garden, and that is all on the raised mounting base:
I missed these posts! Love to see this craftsmanship. Thanks for sharing! T Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Outstanding work Robert! Sad to hear about your dad I have my mother hear and she going to be 91 this year! so I know the feeling you're going thru not easy! but we do what we can! It going to look outstanding when you're done! I seen you work! amazing as always! To bad those switch controls couldn't be more under the track I did some track switches static since they were 3 D printed! Wasn't easy to get them done since the small pieces but good eye candy as you would say! I hope it oK to post this photo these I had painted up! like that set up will be nice to run trains! and have those switches working!
