Anybody know if there are any FL-9s left on Metro-North or Conn. DOT? What has happened to those that are gone? Scrapped? Sold? Thanks. [ 01. June 2004, 07:17: Message edited by: Don Rickle ]
I went to the Croton Shops in October for the Metro-North open house and there were several on the premises. I think that they are still on hand for when needed. If you can be there, it is a great open house to go to. Mt 5 year old son and I made a day of it. Six o'clock train on the LIRR, transfer at Jamaica to Penn. Subway to Grand Central Station and picked up Metro-North. A fall excursion up the Hudson was also included at the open house and then 4 more train rides back home. Nine trains and 12 hours and my son wanted to go get on another train. Even I had enough by then. Bob
Here is a pic of an FL9 in NYC colors. Here is a pic of my son at the controls of a ConnDot P32 from that day. Bob
Thanks for the info Bob. I remember when they painted those into the NYC scheme. Unfortunately, I've never seen them. If I'm not mistaken didn't some of the rebuilt FL-9s run over the LIRR for a while?
Up until a few years ago, the LIRR was using old F7's, F9 and FA's for cab control units. None of them were FL9s though, at least in the dozen years I've been here. Bob
Right, I remember the classic cab control units, but I thought a couple rebuilt FL-9s were used in the early 90's for experimental purposes, for some reason I wanna say with double decker cars?
2012 and 2013 were repainted in New York Central colors about 1999 for a celebration of an anniversary of the former NYC line on the west side of the Hudson. They were never restored to Metro North colors. 2012 still sees service from time to time. 2013 is at the Danbury Railway Museum. 2006 had an electrical fire in the HEP unit some time ago and was retired to the DRM. Here is 2006, soon after the fire.
How many FL-9s are at the DRM? Is 2013 owned by the museum? Any plans to fire up the EX UP E unit (NYC paint)?
There are two FL-9s at the DRM. 2013 is owned by Metro North. 2006 is owned by Connecticut Department of Transportation and was operated by MN. Both are at the DRM on long-term loan or lease. The chances of getting the E9 running are almost nil. It was last used in revenue service by Amtrak on the Auto Train. After they retired it, Amtrak started removing parts. The HEP unit, all the traction motors, and a lot of smaller parts are gone.
FL-9 in New Haven In April, '07 I was wandering around the yard at New Haven and came across an FL-9 painted in the McGinness scheme and numbered 2026 (probably not the original road number). Don't know if it is still around.
Last FL-9s I knew running were on the Wassaic line. Used to see one tied up at night there. But I moved to TX in 2006, so no idea when it was pulled, if it has been. I was told by a friend who is a M-N engineer that it's days were numbered. I do recall Amtrak FL-9s in my teens at the Rhinecliff, NY station. Pentrex had a video of the Hudson line with an FL-9 cab ride and great shots of it going by at various places.
Hello, I've been trying to contact any New Haven fans. No Luck. I'm an n scale New Haven model railroader. Can you tell me about your interest in the New Haven. Thanks, John
John, Sorry for the long delay, but I haven't been on this site for a very long time. I model the New Haven in HO but I also volunteer at the Danbury Railway Museum where we have among other layouts a replica of the Danbury railyard circa the 50's. The layout features New Haven locomotives and rolling stock from all over. What area of interest do you have? A weath of information on the New Haven can also be had on the NHRHTA website which is linked here as well. J.R.
Two are running on th Maine Eastern out of Rockland Maine, hauling tourist from Rockland south, eventually hoping to connect with Amtrak in South Portland.
