Removing Side Frames I just looked at my HO Kato SD45. It doesn't look like to me that you have to remove the bottom of the truck to remove the side frames. The truck body does have a left and right side where the side frames attach. Then the bottom of the truck goes on to hold the axles in place. Hopefully someone knowledgable will post on this. I am surprised at the similarity between the construction of the HO scale and the N scale. Not exactly the same, but definitely similar engineering used.
On the way to the local hobby store to buy some very small self tapping screws I thought about using some brass rod to install some retaining pins, lucky I did as the hobby store did not have self tapping screws so I bought some steel rod and a drill and was able to pin the sideframes to the trucks using a little ca glue, here is a pic of the results. I have to say how amazing the net is, I was chatting to Flash about this solution and within minutes telling him I'd completed it
Amazing Amazing solution. I might have been scared to try. I went to the model RR club to find out about the trucks but no info. I will try again tomorrow. Good job on fixing the problem. That's what real kitbashers do!
Finished Well guys here is the finished 3160, i'm pretty pleased with it howefer the windshields were just too delicate to install so at this stage there are no windshileds.
I have used testors dullcote on the model which I find takes the shine off and looks far more realistic. Yesterday while at the hobby shop I was able to purchase flexible white paint which enabled me to paint the handrails and steps. Well hope you guys enjoyed this little project and it's been rather satisfying doing a HO model. I still have a GP35 and a Short Bay window caboose to do which I hope to do in the next few months.
Good looking locomotive! Paul, you have done an outstanding job on the loco. - When are you moving into HO?
Really HO? Is that really HO scale? Really, Really? Maybe you should put one of the N scale engines next to it just to be sure. That is, so I can be sure. :happy19pb:
Paul, You will have to excuse me while I pick up my lower jaw from off the floor. Gotta love how the lighting really brings out the details like the lift rings and the bell! Is that an awesome-looking engine or what! Hopefully this will fully entice you to the Dark Side of HO, LOL. "Lord Vader, your train is ready."
It sure is a good job! I am about to do the same thing to a Kato SD45 so I am most interested in the thread. BTW, looks like the windshield glass is in, to me.
Different Colors? Colonel told me that the slightly different colors are because of different paint types. Interesting. Hope I can do this with my SD45. Nice models!
Yes the N scale model was painted by Mitch before the days that I took up airbrushing and If I recall he used a Royal Blue paint. I used microscales Jenks blue. Jim, I might consider a switching layout on of these days , at this stage I just wanted a few HO models to display in the house.
The HO one looks huge against the N. Until they are side by side, the size difference is not so apparent. Careful, Paul - a switching layout could be the start of an HO empire
Well if you don't have a place to run that bad boy, bring it with you the next time to come to Texas, and we'll let it stretch its legs on a "home" layout. :teeth:
