I think you need what I'd call a 'passing contact' switch which only sends a pulse of current as the switch 'passes' from one position to another. If you using something like a DPDT you'll get a continuous current connection which will burn out your motor.

I'm new to this too so hopefully someone else will comment and add some confirmation. There are a number of Aus based modellers on here who may be able to recommend something from a locally based supplier.

    Alexander13,

you will have to pay less with manual turnout control. I operate my hand thrown turnouts with manual control. All you need is a switch for frog polarity and some material.

Look at my Westport site and you can see big pictures.

I think with any mechanical device you will go cheaper than with an relay or motor.
I like the mechanical push-pull method because like the prototype you have manually to throw the turnouts.
If you're interested I can make more pictures and better instructions.

Alex, you could use a spring to centre-off DPDT. Or you can use a pair of push buttons.

    Edit:
Actually, you only need a SPDT :) (but still spring to centre-off)

I use Push button (normal open) switches that give youa momentary pulse of current. You can buy them at radio shack 4 for 5.00
    Try them

You need a motor that is strong enough to over come the off-center spring built into a Peco turnout. That is what makes the rail points have good contact.

Going with a constant powered turnout machine obsoletes the PECO turnout spring. When I installed under layout Tortoise switch machines, I removed the point spring on all my PECO turnouts. This is an easy process.

Also, I wouldn't expect to pay less than $12 for a motorized turnout machine. All my PECOs cost above $13. The only way to get a price break on them is to buy them in bulk which I did.
