I've been meaning to take pictures of my layout for a while now, and I finally got around to taking a few pictures this past weekend. For the record, I don't call it complete as I have a ton of small projects still to do, one being the backdrops. But, to start here are a couple overview type pictures. This is a shot of one leg, showing the var east end of the line, at McCook, thru Willow Springs and then the Lemont Bridge. This shows the Romeoville, IL area. The layout continues into another leg at Joliet. Joliet is probably the most unfinished part of the layout as I don't know what I want to do with it completely. Ill get a shot of Joliet when I would add some more. I am still going through some pics and will post some more of individual scenes if requested.
Looking great!!! Whats the make on the bridge, or is it a scratchbuild model? The facia painted black on the front of the layout really gives it a finished look!
Looks Awesome! I'd like to see the bridge also. Lesee, a 991 train leaves Jerry's layout, and is on my layout about 8 hours later...after leaving my layout, it's on yours in another 3 days or so...does anyone else have a layout on the Santa Fe between Tehachapi & Chicago??
Second the motion on awesome. My Santa Fe layout is somewhere between Albuquerque and Los Angeles. Just freelance but tried to capture the scenery of that area. The era started out early 1940's but lately has expanded about 30 years. Too much good stuff other than steam available. Like GoSteelers I keep planning to make some photos to post. Will do it here when I do. Ben
Thanks for all the comments. Okay, here are some more pictures getting closer in: Joilet Yard, where a small local switch is based to handle a few yard duties, mostly interchange with the EJE line that crosses the east side of the line. The yard office is scratchbuilt to replicate the actual Santa Fe yard office. Here is the Lemont Bridge. It is a kitbash of two Walthers double track truss kits, taking me the course of a few weeks to finish, but it is the highlight of the layout for me. The tug is also a favorite for me. Willow Springs is next. This is more or less a visible staging yard, with four long loading strips for piggyback traffic. I used four as that is what the real Willow Springs Yard has. Eventually, I am planning some photos on the backdrop of the UPS Hodgkins sorting facility that all those UPS trailers on the hot trains come from. I just wish someone would release a good UPS trailer. And then McCook junction, the crossing of the Indiana Harbor Belt/BOCT "Joint Line". Those are the four main scenes of the layout as of now. Eventually, I expand the layout to include the line all the way into Corwith Yard and a few of the connecting yards. More pics to come as I continue to update this thread...
Awesome. Keep posting more pics. I'm originally from about 30 miles south of Joliet, and one of the highlights of going to Chicago when I was a kid was seeing the Santa Fe mainline next to I 55. I even took a "tour" of Corwith Yard when I was about 14, which meant you got to sign a waiver and walk around the parking lot. Is that big tall Santa Fe "building" still standing? The one that looks like a really tall square somkestack? I have no idea what it was originally
Is this the type of UPS trailer you're looking for? Click "view sellers other items" for different styles http://cgi.ebay.com/N-Scale-1985-26...goryZ486QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem If you end up getting some of these, please post reviews of them, as I'm curious what the quality is like
Hey Ryan, thanks for the link, but I have purchased a couple of these before, the longer, 40ft drop frame version, and wasn't really happy with the quality for the price. They need a lot of work. Right now, I am working on some sort of overlay to get the graphics correct, via Tehachapifan and what he did, but I haven't been successful yet.
Great job, the details are well done and the bridge is my favorite part. I agree, do you have an illustration of the track plan? Jim
First, if you need mainline connections the Albuquerque Third District is alive and well, albeit in 1972, as my layout! That covers Nelson Tunnel to East Winslow. I got the $100 tour of Corwith Yard in 1980, as very, very, minor shareholder. Pre-digital, but if you're looking for caboose-era, all ATSF shots, with refrigerator car service tracks, the sand tower, enginehouse, etc., I've still got them. The Corwith sand tower was used as the prototype for what I put in Winslow, not necessarily accurate, but more interesting than what was in Winslow!
I like the way you set up the junction at McCook, gives you a place for the work crew with out the danger !
Again, thanks for the comments. I do not yet have a trackplan on the internet. Any ideas on the best method to draw one?
