What does everyone use for roads. I need to model a really worn paved main street in a small town. Any ideas would be helpful!
    Thanks

I used Woodland Scenics "Smooth-it" system.....worked pretty good although you could imitate it by laying strips of balsa along the border of where you want the road and pouring in some plaster of paris then screeding the plaster using the balsa strips as the guide.....kind of how they lay in real sidewalks....The plaster may come out a little rough on the first pass and you can leave it that way if a worn-rut-pot holed road is what you're after..........Then just color and weather the road however you like....

I use joint compound and use stripwood for the edging. Once the compound is applied (2 coats) I let it cure 2 days, remove the stripwood and sand it. Final step is painting it using asphalt paint by woodland scenic.

Nice bit of modeling on that road. I like the rough edge, would go great with some gravel shoulders I have in mind, thanks for sharing this.

It's just that in most of the rural areas where the road is paved there are gravel shoulders and then a ditch. Most of the paved section of the roads are uneven, this method would go well with the gravel shoulders.

OK, I see what you mean. I think I'll see what I can do. I only need a small town old road about a block long.
    Thanks

I have been trying fine grit sand paper. You can get it in grey, black, and oxide red, in many different grits. I does make a convincing gravel road.
