I started with the N-scale Santa Fe style depot which I really like.
Does somebody have a floor plan that shows how such a station was used inside (office, ticket counter, etc).
    Pictures would help as well.
    Thanks

I just ran across this link tonight:

    http://www.atsfry.com/

A lot of Santa Fe historical information...I see there are sections on building records and station layout. Hopefully there will be something there to help.

I'm assuming you are talking about the brick arched window county seat depot, correct? If so, what would your impression be on that being a first N scale kit for me? Overly difficult for a first stab at this?

    Thanks for the link.
I just finished it in about 5 hours while watching TV. It is a nice model that fits well and looks great. The instructions are a little crowded. I will take some pictures since there is a tricky part on the corners of the main bulding that is not well documented. It took me a while until I figured it out how it goes together.

Definitely much more a Southwestern (i.e. New Mexico, California, or Arizona) version of the standard ATSF depot, as the Midwestern and Texas depots look much plainer.

Quite welcome on the link...hopefully there will be something there that you can use. Any pics or advice you can give will be greatly appreciated. It's been probably 12 years since I've done a kit of any kind, and I've never done one as small as N scale.

Actually, from what I hear, the prototype for the Walthers kit is in Marion KS...and some research last night found 6 others of similar style still existing in Kansas alone. A number of those 6 have a neat addition that the Walthers kit does not have...an arched-opening shelter-house/patio passenger waiting area on the end opposite the freight addition.

A bit more research tonight indicates the prototype is probably Mulvane KS, not Marion.

I guess I was thinking of another Walthers ATSF Depot. I think there's an adobe-style one? If so, that's what I meant.

I think what I was thinkg of is a HO-scale model.

There were even adobe/mission theme depots in Kansas...Osage City's is an example. I don't think they were overly location appropriate with their depot/station designs...one of the KS depots I ran across was very heavily European theme.

Here are the pictures of the model. This is straight out of the box. I did not glue the roof, so I can change the light bulb if necessary.

The following two pictures are from underneath since the tricky part is easier to see.

The 4 pieces of wall section overlap each other. Each color is an individual piece.
The first picture is the station while the second is the transition between the station and the freight building.

Thanks for the pics...they show me a lot. It appears that the kit does indeed have separate windows...that's a biggie for me. Me and fine detail painting are kind of like oil and water. Was the problem you had in keeping the numerous pieces square during assembly? When the time comes, I'll be building just the passenger station...not enough room for the combo.

BTW...I was just pondering something related today. The last kit of any kind I built was quite a few years ago. Back then, I was using good ole Testors model glue. What is the glue of choice these days? I'm hoping for something not requiring mixing, and as near fool-proof as possible. I know the latter will be difficult, since we fools are so ingenious when it comes to creative ooopsing.

The model comes with a base/foundation. Although I did not glue the walls to the foundation, I used that piece to keep the walls square.
I use Vollmer plastic glue since I grew up with it but all the new plastic welder glues will work.

I'm not familiar with Vollmer glue or any of those new plastic welders...add another entry to my "to be researched" list...LOL

The models prototype can be found in Stafford Kansas, the Depot in Marion ( now the library ) is almost identical. The model fits very nicely, it does look a lot better if you paint it first and weather it. I am using the model on my Newton Kansas layout as the Marion Depot, I will be scratchbuilding the Newton depot but not in the near future, I am starting by building the Marion Florence branchline.
