I am just getting into HO from N scale and am considering buying Genesis F7 units without sound. Are these reliable units? Do they have any running mechanical problems or have they been basically trouble free. Also, how reliable are the couplers which come on them. Should I replace them with KDs? Which KD is the best or do the new 148 just drop in. Thanks
Every Athearn Genesis I have purchased over the years has run very well. I have both steam and diesel - but I don't have the Genesis F7! I am actually looking for some B&O units right now.
I have four of the Athearn Genesis F-3's. All are very good runners with a good low-speed. I haven't found a need to replace the couplers yet. The oldest is now four years old, the three newest are three years old.
I own (8) Genesis F3s & F7s and have never had any complaints about operation or couplers. All A units now have sound and they continue to run flawlessly. I like Athearn Genesis stuff.
