I want to start collection famous trains of the past and wish to start with 4449 and a typical trainset. I am finding that there are not many choices out there. Can anyone point me in the right direction for this steam engine?
Bachmann is making it and it's probably the cheapest, precision has it as well. Here it is on the Bachmann link http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/catalog/?function=detail&id=1556
SP train sets As for passenger train sets you could go with any of the daylights trains or the "gray" larks trains( SP gray was used on the old heavyweights)
Broadway Limited/Precision Craft has announced both Coast Daylight and Morning Daylight consists. One was to have been delivered this year (don't think it has been) and the other next year. They are pretty photowise but somewhat pricey dollarwise. You can see both at: http://precisioncraftmodels.com/BLI---SP-Coast-Daylight-Passenger-Cars,-HO-c3495.html http://precisioncraftmodels.com/PCM---SP-Morning-Daylight-Passenger-Car-Set,-HO-c3128.html Ben
I have owned four different Bachmann Daylight GS-4s and have sold every one of them. They're too light to pull any appreciable number of passenger cars. The PCM looks like an excellent, albeit expensive, option. I'd rather spend a few extra dollars and get something I'll be happy with.
You could rework the Bachman as well. It'd be much cheaper to buy a new Can motor for it and add some detail.
CB&Q Fan, If you have not found the 4449 you wanted, I think I still have a new one in its box that I have not had a chance to run yet. If you want to email me, I can email you a photo of the one I have. By thinning out these newer 'streamlined' engines, it will help me to enjoy the older steamers I like better. Let me know, and I will go look and let you know what 'streamliners' I have left.
