    hmmm "the year - 1950" ...

I don't think any PRR locos were painted Tuscan until something like 1952.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but the new E8's are without dynamic brakes which Kato's earlier releases had, (the single fan between the two banks of radiator fans), making them correct for Santa Fe units. If they had double headlights and 'freight' pilots that is.

That information came along with the announcement of these locos however many months ago when they said they'd be updating the paint. A dual headlight would also let them redo the CB&Q units I believe.

I must have missed that bit of information at the time, I'm sure it would have grabbed my attention if I'd seen it anywhere. Let's let the Pennsy fans have their moment then see what Kato does. Hmm, correct Santa Fe E8's, maybe even with large number boards, (Kato did them on the PA's that had them), with matching Zebra stripe NW2's.

That info was available at the end of May based on another post I had made about doing the CB&Q units.

They have the tooling now, let's see it.

Late May/June I was riding trains around Europe so I may have missed a few post round that time.

I notice the SP units have double headlights, freight pilot and dynamic brakes so they have done two different units so far with the new tooling.
P.S. make that three, forgot the UP, it has single headlight, passenger pilot and dynamic brakes.

That E8 is beautiful, as all PRR E8's are. I have 3 of them, from the early days, and the Tuscan Red of old seems to be browner and lighter in hue. Are the new ones darker and redder? I am curious to see if Kato changed their Tuscan Red.

I think Kato struck a bonanza a couple of years ago with the single stripe E's, and those are what I use to lead my Kato old PRR passenger set.

The latest one I got was at a trade at a swap meet and it is an older, browner, 5 striper. I ran them all day yesterday.

I'm going to pick up a pair of the new E-8's to pull the Broadway Limited passenger cars on the new layout I'll be building in February. I already have the new GG-1.

The paint appears to be a deeper Tuscan Red than the earlier units which PRR fans sort of panned due to its faded look. Hopefully it will match the paint on the Broadway Limited cars. But some may shy away from using the new release with the old. When I rode the PRR Spirit of St. Louis and the Penn Texas (trains 3&4] back in 1963-68 having equipment of varying shades of Tuscan was absolutely normal.

The 15 car 1950 Broadway Limited weighed more than 2,140,000 pounds and required three rather than just two EMD E8s.(6,000 HP). Since the Pennsy didn’t buy any E8 B units it would have to be a A-A-A lash-up. EMD E7s were also used on the Broadway in A-B-A sets as were A-B-A sets of ALCO PA1s and on rare occasions Baldwin Centipedes pairs and A-B-A sets FM Passenger Sharks and Erie Builts. All of these locos were painted Brunswick Green. Pennsy started the change to Tuscan Red in 1952. The Centipedes and Erie Builts retained their Brunswick Green for their entire service life, Prior to 1950 a Pennsy T1 4-4-4-4 Duplex locomotive was appropriate power.

Also in 1950 the Santa Fe stainless steel sleeper Regal Spa would not be in the consist. From 1947 to 1953 a group of sleepers were provided by Santa Fe and Pennsy. The Pennsy pool cars were painted two tone gray and included Imperial Park, Imperial Pass and Imperial Point. These cars were removed in 1953 and replaced by Santa Fe post-war stainless sleepers in the Regal series. New York-Los Angeles through car sleeper service was discontinued in late 1957.
