Hi, I am a newcomer to this website and here to post my first message. I have loved trains all my life and am trying my luck at modeling. I recently purchased Micro engineering city viaduct kits to attempt to build an elevated train layout. Has anyone had any experience in building this structure using Micro Engineering kits? Can anyone give me any advice? Thanks Jerry
Welcome at TrainBoard, Jerry. I'm not familiar with ME viaduct kits. Good luck. But you read good things about ME. Wolfgang
are you doing an 'L' train or a monrail style elevated train? I haven't had any experience with any elevated trains, although I have often thought about it. I hope that you let us know how it turns out and include a few pics. That could be an interesting space saver on a layout (which is why I had wanted to do it in the past).
ME Elevated Viaducts Hello Jerry; I have built several feet worth of the Micro-Engineering Viaducts, and they are a well designed and detailed kit. That being said, they are somewhat tedious to remove from the sprues and clean up. Assembly is also more involve than one would expect, but the results can be well worth it. Some tips: Work slowly and use clamping tools generously Apply weights to the parts to prevent warping Check alignment often, pre-fitting is critical Use liquid cement to flow in between parts - which you should clamp together in advance - to insure good alignment and trueness Building a curved viaduct can be challenging; I recommend drawing out a full-size template so as to insure that the curve stays to the desired radius. Measure twice, cut once! David Martin, Ph.D.
I'm in the final (I hope) stages of building the highline for my blast furnace, which is basically a couple of feet of elevated railway - I recently added some pics of this to my website. David's use of the word 'tedious' seems rather appropriate. I don't think I'll be building an EL anytime soon
My first post and I hope I haven't done anything wrong. I found myself here because I searched for "elevated train" and someone here might be able to help. I am in the birthing throes of a 10 foot by 8 foot HO layout. I am featuring the Camden NJ area and want to include elevated trains. I can not find an el (subway type) powered HO (1/87) car/engine. If anyone knows where they can be bought (even kits will do) It will be appreciated.
Google is your best friend. I just googled with the words elevated model layout. I got this page here: Modeling the New York City Subway There is more out there. Just google it up. Here, I found this: Walthers Model Railroad Mall -- product information page for 920-31016 There are a lot of subway modelers out there. A lot of them model in O scale 2 and 3 rail. Here is an O scale forum for it. they may be able to steer you to some HO info. Subways/Transit/Traction - Forum Powered by eve community
