After a bit of hard work and a few moments of frustration, I finally finished my Southern Pacific F-4 2-10-2. The mechanism and boiler are concor. I used a spare valve gear from a wathers 2-8-8-2 to convert it to walscherts like the prototype. I removed the rear sand dome and filled, and added a BL Feedwater heater and various details. The delta trailing truck is from model power The tender is a bachmann with tender pickup added. I just need to add smokebox hinges. Here's a reference photo from the southern pacific steam index.
Having just stumbled in from Google, was admiring you work - then realized :tb-shocked: it's "N" scale ! Excellent results from talent and a lot of teeeny pieces ! Bob
Thanks for the comments. To remove the rear sand dome, I removed the stock one and traced it on a sheet of K&S clear film. It was the best thickness match I had for the recess I had to fill. After shaping the insert, I glued it in place and used tamiya putty to fill the edges. After a bit of sanding, I primed the area with my airbrush and sanded again. I repeated the prime/sand about 3 times to finish it off. There is a slight trace with the naked eye, but it is gone in the pics. I used a GHQ part for the steam turret on the top. The most difficult part of the build was the valve gear swap, but luckily the wathers parts lined right up.
Great minds think alike... I did something very similar a few weeks ago in HO, although mine's supposed to represent an F3. I chopped, moved and changed some bits, and added some new piping and a more appropriate front dome, plus SP numberboards and a replacement Bachmann tender. It has a Tsunami decoder installed, and although it's not a brilliant puller, it looks and sounds the part, and is a fifth of the price of a brass equivalent. I attach a picture of the original IHC version, and my 3661. Brian Moore
Hurray for SP Fs (as in 2-10-2 not diesels ) I cobbled up an F1 a long time ago. Kind of goofy looking compared to what you guys did.
I would have loved to do a tutorial on this one, however my camera went with my wife on a trip these last two weeks and therefore I didn't get any build pics. I finished it yesterday about 2 hours before she got home from the trip. The conversion was straight forward, the time consuming part was filling the boiler.
Thanks! Your patience paid off, very well done!! And it is amazing how much work can get done on the layout / these special projects when the wife is away from home... :tb-cute: Cheers Dirk
SP Steam, Where did you get the Worthington BL pump on the LH side of the boiler? I would like to buy two for some of my projects. Gary
I purchased them from Republic Locomotive Works. Great website with lots of stuff for detailing engines. If you want a detail part, more than likely RLW has it.
Delta trailing truck I'm currently cutting up a b-mann heavy mountain to make an SP MT-4. I'm using a cut up Kato gs-4 skyline casing and cab. And a b-Mann oil Vanderbilt with spectrum trucks. But what I lack is a delta trailing truck. What model power engine is that off of? Or where can I get one. Thanks for the help, George
