I have a replacement shell for a Kato Mikado that I want to paint as the plastic molding has a different "sheen" in areas. Also, I want to paint the smokebox and firebox silver.

Anyone know what color I should use? (I don't want to just assume black and silver)

I typically use Tamiya's model paints with my airbrush if that matters.

Use a graphite color, another option is to use a grey and overcoat with testors modelmaster metalizer. I've had good luck with these

I suggest that you try Polly Scale Brunswick Green and graphite. I'm using Brunswick Green if I have to repaint any steam loco boiler shells.

The drivers drivers, side rods and valve gears are painted withe Neolube # 2.

Tamiya XF-69 Nato black looks ok. It isnt a new black look, more of a slightly faded look.

I picked up some Polly Scale Grimy Black and Floquil Brunswick Green from the LHS. I'll give them a test spray and see which I like.

Any idea what color for painting the smokebox and firebox silver?

As mentioned above most railroads used a coating of graphite mixed with oil to cover the smoke box and fire box. They usually did not put lagging over the smoke box and fire box so they were uninsulated and too hot to hold any normal paint. To recreated this I mix dark gray and silver. Maybe a little black to darken it more.

Thanks for the further information. The LHS did not have graphite and tehrefor I did not know what real color it was being targeted for.
