Greetings All, Due to a local gentleman's decision to changes scales, I had the good fortune of becoming the new owner of an almost exact replica of MR's famous Clinchfield Railroad. Benchwork and foam scenery base construction is of high quality, and basic scenery/woodland scenics ground cover is done, just leaving detail-type scenery to complete. Track is Atlas code 80 flex with all rail joints soldered, Peco insulfrog turnouts, and is wired for DCC operation with soldered feeders throughout. The only track work I'll need to finish is the Dante yard tracks. The mainline is there however. The passing siding at Fremont was also omitted but should be easy enough to add it back in. Several structures were included, along with a couple of scratchbuilt coaling facilities for the Hamlin and Mullins loaders. Shaun McMillan and I have been life-long modelers and fans of the L&N/Family Lines/CRR/Seaboard System and luckily already have around 50 locomotives and close to 300 pieces of rolling stock. My plans are to finish the scenery on this layout, enjoy running some trains, and since it's light weight and portable, consider taking it to some rail shows around the Eastern OH, Western PA area in the future. I still have plans to model a portion of the L&N Chicago Sub, but when this amazing deal came up I just couldn't pass it by. This will be the perfect platform for me to use as a project railroad before starting the Chicago Sub. I look forward to sharing some pics of the progress once I start working on it! Mike C.
My club was given a partly finished Clinchfield layout when a friend moved out of town. We plan to eventually make it the centre piece of the N scale section but there is a bit of work to do as it was stored under his house for 12 years. My road is Santa Fe but since we got the Clinchfield layout I've aquired four Clinchfield F units, two GP9's and a GP38 plus a train of hoppers and a couple of cabooses.:tb-biggrin: On location Kaoshiung, Taiwan.
Kewl deal Mikey!!!! I am in the mood to do some train work,, just too dern humid in the train room/ garage. I thought about working on the helix,, heck I dunno. Once again,, great to hear that you can run some trains now,,Adios Wyatt
Ah, so you're the fellow who won that eBay auction. The shots on it were so poor that it was very hard to get the slightest idea of the quality of the work on that layout. Glad to hear that it was worth it in the end. ---jps
Wyatt, Yeah man!...Pretty happy to have something I can use to get some trains rolling again as well! MC
Shooter, Yeah, that was me. I'll try and get some pix posted in the next day or two so you can see how it looks from a closer perspective. Mike
Wow. It's a good design, particularly for its age. And it sounds like yours was built with more modern methods. It should be a good show layout.
I just happen to look at the original Clinchfield issue the other day. It's got tape holding it together because I looked at it so many times when I was a kid. It's amazing how that layout is still a favorite with so many people. I wonder how many people got into N because of that layout. I know I did. I remember going to our mall in Naperville, IL not having any idea they were having a train show that day, and came to find out the layout was there on display. Dave The Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Ry. Dave, I remember reading each issue back in Jr. High School when MR published the series. That was the layout that really got me seriously interested in N-Scale. Tomorrow (Tuesday) is my first day off work since I picked it up last week so I'm planning to take a few pics to post, break some trains out of the storage boxes and give it a proper test drive! Mike
Congrats on the great layout and I hope we can see photos of your progress. I was watching that auction and as one poster already said the pictures did not do the layout justice. I couldn't pull the trigger, but glad you did! Enjoy.
Hey guys, We finally got the layout set up and running a couple days ago. My brother took a few short video clips this evening so I thought I'd post them. I'll post up a few more still pics soon and maybe another video of some run-bys. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYcJtPY26Co"]YouTube - Clinchfield[/ame]
kewl vids,, but my heart is broken,,, there was not even one soo line car,,,,,lol Looks great,, have fun with it. Adios Wyt
Not true! Car number 23 in the train, the gon right ahead of the Family Lines covered hopper is a Soo Line gon! I made sure to include that in your honor! LOL I'll make sure the SOO rolling stock is featured a little more prominently the next time. Mike
Congrats Mike! Clinchfield was always one of my favorite MRR layouts. The other was Ed Hammer's Burlington Northern in N back in 1989 (I think). Both are very cool layouts. Looking forward to seeing more picts!
I will have to go look again... been busy with looking for a new job,, and putting the benchwork up for the staging. I believe ya. Adios Wyatt
Does anyone know the current whereabouts of the original Clinchfield N Scale layout ? If you do, please post a contact for the current owner. Thank You.
