This is two Walthers grain elevator kits loosely placed where they will go when finished. The extra silos are made from PVC conduit with flats milled into the pieces for a flush fit. This photo is older and does not show the fire log factory that now sits in the top right hand corner of the photo where the air freshener sits. Lastly, this is the Walthers yard office I built. It is as-is but as of yet does not have a permanant place on the layout.
Nice Walthers kitbashing going on Sillystringtheory (Warren?) ... I like your work with the grain silos, Duraflame log factory and cement 'products' factory. On the subject of the roundhouse... I was looking at Powersteamguy1790 thread of the new JJJ&E... about fitting one of these big terminal arrangements into much less space than Bob (Powersteamguy1790) has. I may be mistaken... but maybe on smaller layouts these roundhouses would be best suited for an 'inside' corner location. I've been looking at places on my benchwork where a roundhouse could take-up an otherwise inaccessible area for other industries and feel that a semi-circle (18 stall) roundhouse could go in one of my corner locations. I could put a 19" radius run-around behind it too... but it would be difficult to get to any derailed trains. If I don't use a run-around track behind the stalls... I could put the back of the roundhouse against a curved corner backdrop. So lets see... the roundhouse wall length is 10-13/16" plus the space to the turntable of 1-15/16" plus the TT diameter of 10-3/8" equals a total 23-3/16" distance. YIKES... still a lot of real estate needed in a corner location and that doesn't even include the area for mainline tracks. But... with about 28" depth in a about 24" (diagonal) wide corner area... it appears do-able. About 32" depth would be necessary if I use a 19" radius run-around track behind the roundhouse. If any of you guys have some creative alternatives for putting a large roundhouse/TT arrangement... please add your photos!
While not a business served by train these are still example of Walthers’ structures on my layout. In the foreground you can just see a bit of the crude oil loading dock. Oil is the big money maker in “Petrolia”. And if you think this is the last of my Walthers’ structures you are sadly mistaken. Calzephyr may have started this thread but he played right into my hands BWA HA HA HA!!! Sorry if that last bit was over the top. This recession has killed the job market for diabolical mad scientists bent on global domination so we have to get our “BWA HA HAs” somewhere.
Jose: You'll need a 42" width to accommodate the 19" curved radii runaround track comfortably behind the turntable.
Hmmm... I may be using the wrong terminology... Actually... you are correct if the curve was a true 180 degree runaround. However, in an "L" shaped interior corner location I would only need to go 90 degrees around the back of the roundhouse... and the track would not be a true 'run-around'. I'll have to put it on paper to confirm the amount 'real estate' needed to do this.
Jose: if you do put the turntable and Roundhouse in an interior corner, make doubly sure you can access that area in case of derailments. Just lay out the track on the floor or an a wide table to give you the proper perspective.
Those are just 2 of my mods that make up the town. I have 11 mods total. The mods are 30"x72". The mod make up is 2 mods as a town, 6 mods are a yard, 11 tracks, and 2 straigth mods with a corner mod making up a trestle with a river. I used seniking backdrop sheets on the town. Still have alot of scenery to do on the trestle mods and yard mods.
some of my whalters industries most of them are cut up or combined (due to the lack of nice nscale buildings one has to be creatif i guess). lots of good building here thanks for chairing the info guys! stevenb
I’ll bet you thought you had seen the last of this topic and me as well. Shows how much you know. Like a bad rash, I once again return with more photos of, what else, WALTHERS’ STRUCTURES!!! Situated at Port Eureka this silo stores grain delivered by rail and destined for export by ship. Here we have Texaco’s bulk petroleum products distribution center located in Red Bluff.
Even though most of you have seen this , here is the one I like the best (of all my Walthers structures). Great work on ALL the buildings in this thread , it is a real treat !!!!! This is a modified Car Shop and Rolling Crane. Mike
