If I remember correctly, newer handrails are made of a different plastic (Delrin?) than the shells. With all of the discussion of the new Kato SD70ACe's, I have decided to do the handrails. What is the recommended paint? Since Kato has yet to offer parts, I don't want to mess them up just yet.

I use Tamiya for Polycarbonate for my Kato handrails, PC-1 White or PC-6 Yellow, depending on Railroad. It's flexible and stands up to handling better than Arcyllic.

I used PC-1 White on my DRGW SD70ACe.

Testor's Modelmaster Flat White works great as well. Covers well, flows on well and does not dry too quickly.

    Hello Steve,
I second the Tamiya. It is very flexible and not as prone to chips as other paints.

Thanks for the info guys. My local Hobbytown does not have the Tamiya for polycarbonate but did have Testors Pactra Finish for RC cars. It is supposed to be equivalent to the Tamiya according to them. Anyone know about this one? It is beginning to look like the Tamiya will be hard to find in person and I will have to order on th eweb.

    Thanks again,

    Steve E.

FYI...Tamiya lists the White as discontinued so if you can find a source and want some, stock up now. I have yet to find a reasonably quick source on th eweb.

Any paint intended for polycarbonate RC car shells should work ok, it's the flexible property of the paint that stops it flaking off when you crash your car that makes it suitable for handrail painting.
Tamiya is excellent though.. I've seen Steve's work

    Faskolor

another brand is Faskolor from Parma International, it's flexible, water based, non-toxic paint for lexan and should be available in any RC shop...
...or do a search on eBay for Faskolor

...good thing, if you use Faskoat (colorless) you can mix it with any water based paint and you'll get any color you need "flexible" ;)

I agree with Steve. I use the Faskolor as well and have to twist or drop the loco for the paint to chip. Its specially formulated for the RC guys and the torture they put their cars through, so it works well for our needs too. They have a bunch of colors available, but I've been using white and yellow for handrails for the last ten years or so. One bottle will last a loooooong time.

I am one of those"RC guys",and I use waterbased, paints on my bodies, but I use Testor's Modelmaster flats on my railings.I just built a brass DL&W 44T switcher I posted pics of,the railings are yellow, one coat over black.I've never had problems with chipping whatsoever. As far as Fascolor,if you want to go the "polycarbonate paint" route, any LATEX[NOT acrylic!!!] paint sold in small bottles,Createx,ETC,is the same stuff. You can buy a pint of Latex hobby paint for the price of a 2 ounce bottle of Fascolor,2 ounce bottles of Latex are like,a buck..This is all Createx..

Again...thanks to all of you for your responses. I have several of the brands on order so I will report my impressions in a week or so.

    Testors Polycarbonate

So far I have painted two engines (end railings) with Testors Polycarbonate paint (white). No problems as yet, but this paint does get tacky fairly fast. It covers black nicely. I am anxious to try the other brands as they arrive. Testors should be easy to find, but you need a lacquer thinner for cleanup.
