    Hello Tony
I did a search of Trainboard and found your post. I've condenest it a bit.

I find myself between layouts and will be this way for the six months to a year. But I still want to play with trains. I would like to invest in Train Simulation software to enjoy running trains on my PC. It would be nice if different layouts could be used.

I'm running an older (5yr) HP Pavilion PC, model 250 Y, with IE8.0, Windows XP Pro 2002, SP3, and a P4 rated at 3.20GH, 4 gig of ram, The graphics card is an ATI AGP Radeon HD 2400 Pro with 512MB DDR2 on board memory. The Monitor is a flat screen 20". I'm not interested in extreme gaming just enjoyable model train railroad fun.

What would you or any other member recommend ( Train Simulator 2 looks to ba a leading contender) for use as a model train simulator on my PC system. Price is always a consideration and of course, as we all would, be looking for the most bang for the bucks spent.

This is a tough question to pose to the members, and we all have different, ideas, suggestions, and opinions of what might be a good fit for my request.

I welcome any and all of your suggestions and I thank you for taking the time to assist me in my quest.

    Thanks

    See ya
    Ron

    Hello Ron,

Since Train Simulator 2 has been shelved (again), I'll work with what is available currently.

    Microsoft Train Simulator 1
Trainz 09 (06 is still fairly easy to find as well.)
Rail Simulator, and it's newer brother RailWorks.

I myself have used Trainz 06 and MSTS for quite some time now, so here's what I'll recommend.

For those who want to run a model layout and have "DCC" controls as well as a throttle, Trainz is your game.
I honestly didn't like it because my computer couldn't handle it very well at all and I didn't like being able to loop back and go through the same areas over and over in routes. Plus, the fact that most of the routes that were included were fictional was a turn off to me.

Buy it new on Amazon.com: $41.00 ($14.95 used)

For those who would like to run a train, Microsoft Train Simulator is the way to go.

This is my favorite out of the two. I have worked with it for about 2 years now, and am very pleased.
-It has a larger base of add-ons (Both Payware and Freeware, mostly free.) then Trainz, Including Engines, Cars, Routes, Scenery, and about anything else you can think of.
-Far better physics. (Well, atleast on the non-default models.)
-You will have to control a train properly, not exceed the speed limit, and obey all signals and rules, or you will not get a good report at the end of the run.
-Only simulator I know of that will allow you to hump cars.

And, if I'm not enough, a picture says a thousand words.

    Sandpatch,

    Trainz 06:

    MSTS:

I'll admit, my version in MSTS slightly modified from the original, but it is far easier to rework a route to your liking in MSTS. Most of it is just replacing files, no opening of the sim required!

In closing, to me MSTS is the better choice, but the choice is up to you.

Also Ron, with your computer specs, you could easily handle any of the MSTS routes I've shown.

    Thanks Cody
for the great information and the pictures. Wow the Pictures. :tb-biggrin::thumbs_up:

MSTS sounds like what I'm going to go for.

Can I impose on you for additional recomemdations for add ons to MSTS.

Also how's the learning curve? I'll have plenty of time (retired) to devote to it so that's not an issue.

    Thank You

    See ya
    Ron

    Hello Ron,

Sure you can! Give me a PM or an e-mail (think it's in my profile) if you need anything. Wouldn't have replied if I wasn't willing to help.:tb-biggrin:

As for the learning curve, MSTS was easier for me. I never figured anything out in Trainz, which is why I deleted it a while back and decided to focus on one simulator. Since, as I said, some work can be done without even opening the sim itself, I found that quite easy.

If you need any help, give me a yell. :tb-wink:

Admins. No problem with the move. I should have thought of it earlier. But found the original post in the inspection pit when I did a search for "train Simunlation"

Sorry to have had you use your time to do it.

    Thanks
    See ya

i too would say MSTS. I used to run MSTS on a 2002 laptop for years. :tb-cool: ah the good days

I use trainz alot on my main computer as it was easy for my to learn. I just click and drag to create tracks, MSTS had this weird dynamic track thing i never figured out.

I just use MSTS to have a nice cab simulation. but i like trainz better.

Theres alot more you can control with trainz and for me it was easier to learn.

If you want an in depth cab simulation with few bugs, go to MSTS.

If you want to operate like a model railroad or just for fun, then TRS is the way to go

oh yeah, Railsim is kinda a steep learning curve and has some issues. I have 3 simulators and RS has been the worst so far. Its far to complex, has a steep learning curve, and requires a powerful computer to run. Plus as of right now there is little content for RS

No biggie, I was reading the post when I noticed it should have in another forum and move it. I always try to leave what is called a "Redirect" for about a week so the poster know where the heck the post went.
