    Johnny B.

This is for you and of course anyone else that wants to tune in on this.

Here are pictures of the steel mill you were asking about.

Give me a minute or two, I seemed to have lost the file.

    I'l be right back.

From the school of hard knocks and the university of STUFF happens.

After searching every file source in my computer it is clear that the only pictures I had of the steel mill were, was, used to be... here on my albums. Well, I dumped my albums and now they is gone forever. You see my computer crashed taking with it a lot of pictures. I then purchased a new computer and begin to make up new files. It appears I will have to start from scratch. However, what's gone is gone and won't be back. Interesting how that works.

Must check into a back up system.

Oh well, it is what it is.

    Sorry... about that.

    Rick,

With your new computer, pick up an external USB drive and store your data there. It is easy to move to a new computer and they can also be backed up.

PM me if you want more specifics. I have had your pain, and I developed the strategy to make sure it does not happen again.

    Dave,

Me thinks I know precisely what you are talking about. I believe Radio Shack has these. I used to work for them and I still know our local guys and gals and they've been great help.

Still, please share with me some details. It should be as easy as plug-in and play...if I recall correctly.

Now do you have one I can plug into my brain and back-up memory there as well. LOL!

    Rick,

I use the Seagate FreeStyle USB external drives. They come with large sotrage sizes and an embedded back up client that you can use to copy data between drives or to a writable DVD. I have been very happy with the performance and the ease in setting up the storage. I can unplug any of the drives and move them to a new system and all my photos etc are now accessed from the other system.

I have also setup things to automatically backup on a weekly basis all changes to the DVD. This way I have a double set of images that can be moved and read by virtually any computer.

    I hope this helps!

    Dave,

Thanks a bunch and I will give this a nod just as soon as my hearing aids are paid for. Grin.

So, how's your layout coming along?

Wow Rick, I was just going to PM you for some pictures. I was trying to arrange everything to see how it all fit together and decided to go online to find something. I found a few photos that were similar, but obviously the one you gave me was modified.
Anyway, do you still have your old computer? If so I can retrieve all your files from it.

    Hi Rick,

    Glad to help.

The layout is on hold for now. My wife and I have a baby due any day now and I am busy setting up the nursery and getting things ready for our new addition.

I have been working with the drawings to figure out how many turnouts and other non-flextrack assemblies I will need. I am adding all these things up so I can order all of the supplies. I will be hand laying the turnouts and other assemblies, and I will be waiting on my order of ME Code 55 flex to arrive. I ordered 1,200 feet as a start, and am waiting for it to come in.

So it looks like I will be pretty busy for a while.

Rick, I found some of your photos in Railimages and I was disappointed that you didn’t have any photos of your town. I was telling my wife all about it and wanted to show her how fantastic it was. I guess the next time I visit, I’m bringing my camera.

    Johnny B.,

Sorry about that. I plan on putting in some new albums with one featuring Barstow from days gone by and one of Big Bear Lake, Ca. This is where most Barstowites would quietly enter town and hide out along the lake shore to cool off.

The Steel Mill you have I'm sure has been modified. Good to know you found a part number. I do hope it cleaned up. Should I find any additional parts laying around I will get them to you.

You need to know the little lights are 1.5 volts and the larger ones are 12 volt. I learned the hard way on my San Bernardino, Mini-City.

    Have fun and enjoy.

There's some serious kitbashing and cstom modifications going on there. Both the center BF and the building on the right are modified Walthers Blast Furnace kits, the one of the left looks like either a Walthers Rolling Mill or EAF. I love the three stove burners on the BF in the middle, much more stout than the stock kit ones.

Ok good, I’ll bring my computer stuff the next time I come up. I should be able to retrieve most everything, unless it got hit with lightning. There have only been 2 or 3 drives out of maybe 30 that I couldn’t do anything with.

I've spent hours looking at photos in the catalogs, trying figure them out. I do recognize some of the smaller parts from other kits but I can’t identify anything else.

    Sounds good to me.

Pete is seeing if there is anything we can do to recover the albums, I had posted here. I think we will be extremely lucky if that happens. I figure they is gone but we shall see.

Thanks in advance to both of you, Johnny and Pete, for your offer to help.
