I am looking into converting my layout to DCC. What is a cheap yet reliable DCC system for my layout and do I have to change the switch tracks to accommodate for the DCC? I really only have up to $150 to spend on something like this, so I'm willing to try any cheap and reliable system that is out there on the market.
You know, if you were to pick up any system offered currently that meets your price range, you would be most likely to get a lot of fun and use out of it. The companies all make good products, and that goes for their starter sets. The only sober thinking you need to do is to try to match your real amperage needs with what the system you buy can handle, or through-put. However, you could start with any of them and add a booster or two as you go along. Honestly, take your pick...if you are like most of us, you'll learn to enjoy what you end up with. My two cents.
My Digitrax Zephyr cost me $180 when I bought it through Walther's. There are places out there that sell it for much less. I'm sure someone will chime in about them.
X2 on the Zephyr, it has the most amps for a starter, it is a good system to start with. I got mine for $150 from local hobby shop. Here is one from a very good retailer, I have purchased lots from in the past
NCE's PowerCab may do what you want dependent on the size of your layout. Probably the easiest to use, too. Around $150 as well.
+1 for the PowerCab. Do you know any other model railroaders near you? DCC system choices are often based upon geography - what systems are available at the local shops are often used in the area - then when you visit your friends' layouts you can bring a cab along with you. Or, if you have a problem there's lots of locals around who can help. Hi Gary
thanks guys. Now the only questions that I have left are, do I have to change my layout's DC switch tracks to DCC switch tracks, can I put DCC in my Life Like and AHM locomotives, how do you put a decoder in a steamer, and last but not least, can I get an MRC Prodigy Express System with Digitrax decoders.
Most decoders if not all can be used with any DCC system. I know that most of the decoders will have directions on how to change out or to put into a system. Not sure on the AHM or Lifelike but I do know that it can be done. In most steam locos the decoder may be in the tender.
I neglected to mention in my first response that I use the rather cluncky and old Super Empire Builder from Digitrax. It can't read back CV's, but it has the amazing twin-throttle encoder DT400 throttle, and it handles 5 amps of raw power. There isn't a decoder made that this beast can't spank and send "waaaahing" back out to the rails. :mtongue: -Crandell
