This is a great idea. I have some things to provide and will find the appropriate agencies here. My sister and i received trainsets for our first Christmases (1940 and 1945). She is 5 years older. Of course my dad, my grandfather my uncle and later my mother and I all worked for the NKP and so railroading and toys went together for us. Fortunately, i still have a tinplate Lionel set and now model the NKP from Lima to Bellevue as a result. What fun.
I agree with the fact of it being a very thoughtful gesture which hopefully will pur your friends on to a hobby that all can enjoy. Along with giving the URL for this site as a slight nudge. The Atlas sets are reasonable and something worth building from. A used book store might have MRR books specific to the scale of the trainset might be a good starter. But overall Outstanding:thumbs_up:
I posted this a couple of years ago and many responded. Well here I go again its that time of year. If your so inclined please share your thoughts on giving the gift of trains.
I think it's a wonderful idea!!..............along with the gift, maybe give an inspirational thought as to what got "you" started in trains................ I got started in my late 40's, because no one ever gave me a set, and I REALLY wanted one, so, when I reached adulthood & had some "disposable" income, I bought my own!! :tb-cute: I'm 60 now, and I got my grandson started when he was 2, now he's an "old hand" @ 7.
I recently donated my HO stuff to my two young nephews. My brother-in-law is gonna run them around his tree. Its mostly bachmann, like-like, etc. Atlas track though....
I have done that for some kids I knew...with complete layouts-- or complete except for a few places to put extra buildings. 2x4 foot Colorado mountain layout w/ 2 manual switches- 1 to depot freight platform/ team track, 1 to mine "site." 2x4 foot layout divided down middle. 1 side, farm town with trunkline junction; other side port with export grain elevator and dockside track
That is a great idea. My father worked for the railroad and one of his coworkers had a layout in his home. He took me over there one afternoon and showed me his layout. Needless to say, I was hooked. Afterwards during the holiday season, he stopped by my house and spoke with my dad. He asked me how was i doing in school. Then he told me to go out to his truck and get is bag because he was "too tired" to get it. It was a Tyco Silver Streak trainset that he had given to me. I remember that just like it was yesterday and that is the reason I got started into the hobby...
