    Hi,

Well I was assembling the rolling stock for the a show tomorrow, and after carefully select all of the era correct rolling stock, the transition diesel and some steam locomotives, I go to my boxes for cabooses and find I have now caboose for ATSF prior to 1960. How could I have done such a dastardly deed? I thought I had them, but I fear I may have lost a few along with a few other items....

Well I now see I have to go on a search for era specific cabooses. I am looking for 1936 to 1955 time frame. The new IM CE-1 is a 1960+ as are the Atlas EV cabooses. I have a 36' Riveted Steel Caboose. MT #100030 in my rolling stock database and I just can not find it. So I will scour the internet for the right ones.

What would be the proper caboose(s) for this era? I do not have any ATSF roster information at my disposal. It looks like MT and Atlas have done wood sided cabooses as well as 34 and 36 foot steel cabooses. What should I be looking for in a nutshell?

    Thanks!

David and of course all tuned in,

David, you wrote: I am looking for 1936 to 1955 time frame. End quote.

One of my favorite resources for finding ATSF equipment in the time frame mentioned is: http://www.snowcrest.net/photobob/collectionindex.html Jack Whitmeyer's Collection.

I've attached some thumbnails you can take a look at, from the same collection. The photos are not mine and used here strictly for illustration and documentation.

If I'm not mistaken, the old standby Atlas cupola caboose (this is a 2006 run) is based on a ATSF prototype?

    Atlas N Cupola Caboose

While not spot-on, it could be a stand-in, and certainly could be detailed further? Should be easy to find, as these Santa Fe mineral brown cabooses were run by Atlas in September 2003, November 2004, and March 2006.

Here's a nice laser-cut wood kit from American Model Builders: Kit No. 865 - Santa Fe Caboose
American Car & Foundry delivered 150 of these wood cabooses to the AT&SF Railroad in 1923. The 28' 11" long waycar became a common site all over the Santa Fe system and a few even survived into the 1960's. The HO scale rendition features a full carbody width toolbox, truss rods, laser-cut ladders, special handrail bending jig, screen doors/windows, and cupola sunshades.
