I have some NCE decoders; some are installed and some are not. As far as I can tell, the decoders are not labeled.

How can I tell if these decoders are two function or four function?

I have access to JMRI on a programming track. If the NCE decoder is installed, can I use the JMRI to tell if it is two function or four function?

    Thanks for the help.

Alll the NCE decoders I've seen have the alphanumeric designators on them but some are not very apparent so you may need a magnifier to see them better.

Compare them with the NCE product list. Most seem to be a minimum of 4 functions unless it is a special like the ATLS4 which is a 2-function decoder.

JMRI may well tell how many functions are available for programming.

I'll check. Had not thought of that.

I was surprised to see that they all had four functions with only one or two exceptions. I thought naybe I was mistaken, so I asked the question here.

Had not thought of checking with JMRI. That's an obvious way to check if you have it available.

    Thanks for the help.

Slightly off-topic question: what exactly are the "functions?" Is speed control one? Is lights one? Other than sound, what does one need? (Forgive me if these are stupid questions. The new Digitrax announcement at the NSC convention has me back up on the DCC fence. :) )

For other than sound, functions are primarily used for lighting effects. Your basic decoder is usually a 2 function decoder that uses the functions to control the front (F0) and rear (F1) lighting on the loco. If you are controlling flashing ditchlights, you need a 4 function decoder. Clear as mud!

    Decoders

If you take a little time and do some research about decoders in general and look at the website for the decoder manufacture, the info is there. That way you do not have to be led by the hand.

The decoder documents usually tell you which color wires are which Functions.

With my first LokSound decoder, I looked at the documents and saw four functions with which color wire is controlled by which CV.
Same thing with my first Digitrax decoder with four funtions.

Do a Google search for dcc info and build the Favorites section of your Internet Browser folder with info on different aspects of model railroading.
