I'm planning on putting a wood chip facility at one end of my layout. There are no readlily available kits to be built. So here's my attempt at some of the equipment. So far I have the crane built and the loading bunk. I still have to come up with a couple buildings and the wood debarker and the wood chipper. The kit is based on a real one. Found it in the Oct 2002 issue of Model railroader, pages 96-99. Thanks
rottin1, your facility looks like it's going to be very nice! I hope you'll post more as your installation progresses. -Gary
Whoops, sorry about that Charlie. No malfeasance intended, just wasn't thinking. rottin1, I was pointing out that Traincat offers a nice etched brass woodchip loader facility that might provide some of the bits you're still seeking (Google: traincat woodchip). But you're doing a nice job scratchbuilding it!
Gary: Nice stuff that Brass, but that's exactly why I scratchbuild. I simply cannot afford Brass. Nor have I ever worked with it. Thanks for the info though. If I could figure out what's wrong with my scanner I would scan the article from the Oct 2002 issue where I got the idea from. If anyone has that issue of Model railroader and can scan those 2 pages, feel free and do so and add the pics to this thread. Thanks you guys!
Johnny B I also am building the same wood chip plant I have the log crane built But was stumped on the grapple for it. Did you build yours or where did you get it Thanks wendell
This is really nice! I love seeing people scratch-build their own when the choices are few. I'd love to have some of these pictures added to the logging group (see my sig for a link).
Very nice work. For those of us (like me) that don't scratch build much, what materials did you use to come up the the loader and crane? I know they're styrene, but is it from Plastruct? And if you don't mind me asking, what did this end up costing you to make? Your work is great--if you didn't tell me you'd built them from scratch I'd have thought they were from a kit. This is exactly what I'm looking for the woodchip/pulpwood operation I have planned. Please post more pictures of your progress!
All of it was Evergreen. And to be honest , I really couldn't tell you how much it costs me because I have a huge box of Styrene, all shapes and sizes. I've been adding to that box of styrene for years now. This is merely a guess, but I'd have to say maybe 15-20 bucks? Most of it all Evergreen. I do have some pieces on Plastruct, but not much. Mainly big I beams. For glue, I use Ambrose Pro weld. THE best stuff for scratchbuilding, IMO!
Good afternoon guys. After a long absence, I am back working on my layout and wood chip plant. I will post updated pics now that I'm back. Thank you to everyone who has and had commented on this. Thanks!
I built a woodchip hopper for my club layout sawmill that I have totally scratchbuilt. It is in the June/July 2009 N scale issue. Here are some pics of it.
