Anybody have any pictures of trains going across the bridge there? I can't seem to find any online and was wondering if anybody had any information here. Thanks!
I saw his page -- i was just wondering if anybody had found a picture of a train actually going across, or what type of freight traffic it would have actually seen. -Rob
I believe the bridge you are referring to is the one that carried the SAL mainline between Raleigh, N.C. and Richmond, VA. I say that because I am not familiar with the SAL line between Norlina, N.C. and the Norfolk/Portsmouth, VA. area or where or if it also had a bridge over the lake. However, if it is the mainline bridge, all of Seaboard's traffic between Richmond and Raleigh would have crossed that bridge. Since I can't lay hands on my Virginia division time table I can't give you all the numbers but would have included all of the "Silver" fleet, mail & express trains #3 and #4 and for a long time SAL ran a Richmond-Raleigh local. All of Seaboard's through freights would also have crossed that bridge, including but not limited to; TT-23/24 straight piggy-backs, time freights #86, #280, #75 and #175, and #27. Since I don't have the tt available I can't give you any of the local freight numbers. I also failed to find any photos of trains on that bridge although there are a "coupla long tons" of SAL trains crossing various bridges throughout the system. I do know that the Raleigh-Richmond segment of the SAL had the highest traffic density so it was probably one heavily trafficked bridge.
