I purchased 5 pair Of Micro Trains Andrews trucks with couplers a while ago. I was going to use them as replacements on some Deluxe Innovations 40 ft. steel boxcars, but I don't know if they would be correct for these cars. Anyone know the proper use for these trucks? Thanks for your time... Mike
It depends on the period. The with its cast frame, Andrews truck was introduced in 1898 and soldiered on for many years. I can't remember when they were pulled from interchange service. Model Railroader did a nice piece on trucks within the last couple years. If you check their database, you might be able to get a back issue. Andy "Tetsu Uma" Edit: Wow - I can't believe that article was from 2003. I guess my internal calendar is on a fast clock.
I think from memory they were the were no longer able to be used in interchange service after 1956. Cheers, Alan.
According to John Nehrich's Steam-Era Freight Car Modeling, "freight cars with Andrews and Vulcan trucks could be seen in revenue service through the end of the steam era." Andrews trucks were popular because they used the journals of old arch bar trucks, and wheel sets were much easier to change compared to Bettendorf trucks. Sales of Andrews trucks peaked in the 1920's.
I use them on Intermountain composite gondolas, and also used some on Intermountain tank cars. Also on older box cars. Just took some cars that seemed appropriate, but did not check every single car
