I have a couple questions relating to these units. I see they have released these loco's in HO,Atlas I think(?) Does anyone predict a release of these in N scale? If not to be,can anyone tell me the best way to go about building these puppies? I've got a Kaslo -9 CN cab & they are nearly the same,as in it could be bashed to replicate the GP40-2w type cab,but if there be an easier way, then Im all for it.I cant access the Kaslo site at the mo,so cant tell if they make a "-2w" cab or not. Anyone got any ideas? I would like to build 3 of them.........in N scale
Hey Karl, that is right on the money, thank you!!! Now that I have ordered the last 2 aval. has anyone actually done one of these kits? I'm using the Atlas GP40-2 non-dynamic shells. Any info appreciated.
Jason, I've done several dozen. No big problems that I can remember. Can't recall if you have to mill a bit of the front of the mechanism down as the wide cab is shorter than a regular cab/nose. I know that you do for a SD40-2W conversion. The Kaslo kits also come with snow shields which makes the Geeps look even more distinctive.
Here is a nice article about the "real ones" , there is plenty of pictures to help you . http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/PDF/gp40specialreport.pdf
Hey Louis, that is an excellent site for reference, thanks so much! After all the searches I've done,i thought there woulnt be anything else out there..... Grant, its great to see your still active on the forum,I do check your web site from time to time for updates.Would you mind emailing me with any pics or hints of construction,or pm.As I'd really like to get these right the first time. Thanks again to everyone for the info shared, muchly appreciated.
My regular power on the mountain job is the 9401 and the 9651....which is both versions of the model. If you need any detail shots, let me know and I will get them for you.
I hope you will built your model shortly because we all know that once a guy build a model that does not exist , shortly after a manufacturer announce it ... Seriously show us your progress , I will follow that avidly .
Hey Jerry, Thanks for posting that, she is looking abit 'how ya goin' these days.....any more 'detail' shots Jerry? Hi Louis, Yes you're spot on,thats why I was asking if the HO one was released yet lol.... No doubt,as soon as its started,it will be released in N. Although Grant has done a bunch of them.......should be announced any day now lol........ Louis,do you know of any other CN sites that you could share with us?
Beautifull picture on the S curve bridge Jerry ! ( or maybe the bridge is not that long ! ) Here is some other site I use to get info : Canadian National Locomotives http://stewart.railfan.net/rail/cn-engines.htm This is a free monthly magazine about railroad above the 45th , loco acquired and sold , there is a lot of fresh and older pictures submited by railfans : http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/
Hey Grant, If you see this could you please pm me,as I'd like to pick your brain about doing these kits. Thanks,Jase.
Ok,up date. Did order the Athabasca kits, they are nice but the Kaslo has everything needed so they get the money lol. But,its going to be a few months before Kaslo gets more of these kits out. Im going through Jim at Odd Ball, dont know if there is any other suppliers out there with current stock? So I'll just have to wait. Thanks for getting back to me Grant,I'll pm shortly.
WoooHoooo,Jim @ Oddball came thru for me. 4 kits turned up (NC-4) + a bunch of decals. Now,anyone have any more info before I start these? Btw,Jim has 1 kit left in stock.....
LOL! Ah there is always a reason........ Back in the 80's DRGW leased 3 or 4 of CN's GP40-2w's for traction trial's (I think) or might have been to assess the comfort cabs as well,my librairy is packed away at mo so cant refresh the memory...... But thats my reason lol & Im sticking to it ;-)
Jason, Post some photos when you get a chance. I've wanted to do one of these for a while. On a side note, did you get my PM or either of the email responses I sent you last week? I got one bounce and the PM feature says something about not being able to send you an email through TB. -Ryan
No yo are right, I remeber those units transiting the BN, thanks for digging up that memory, forget all about it. One of the last CN units I saw was leading a BNSF freight in Rosenburg Texas so now days they can be anywhere.
A little progress. Well, one shell turned up (3 more on the way) & started hacking away, needs cleaning up,its been awhile since I did plastic work & need to learn how to "work it" again......but its a start.
