I recently acquired this set, but I had the matching freight set back in the day (1969)! I also have 4 empty boxes (Aurora)from buildings from the same era but I haven't taken any pictures of them yet but I will post when I do.

The current Life-Like ones run like champs. I've put many a one under HOn30 conversions. If you made it a tender engine, it would probably run better.

    Here they are!

My first locomotive purchase and my first steam locomotive! The B&O diesel is an Arnold (Arnold/Rapido?) purchased new in 1968 or maybe late 1969 along with 4 B&O passenger cars. It now has MT couplers and still runs well. It has been a reliable little workhorse for a long time.

The 0-4-0 is an Atlas product that still runs as well as or better than other locomotives from the same time frame. It has been as reliable as a sunrise. It works so well that it's principal duty is to provide 'helper' service for stalled trains! LOL I just send it around the layout to give a stalled train a little push to get it going again. It, too, has MT couplers.

It's also the engine used for my Christmas layout-in-the-tree:

I've bought several more of Atlas' 0-4-0's but none of them work as well as my original one. Don't know why. Could just be that mine has had all the bugs worked out of it over the years although is still has the original Atlas motor in it.

I bought a Bachmann 0-4-0 that looks identical to the Atlas but it isn't in the same league. Nice looking, but just can't perform like the Atlas.

Thanks for the great trip down memory lane!

    Darrell, quiet...for now

I think this is my last oldie:

Lima GP30, sadly it has given up the ghost. Though that's not surprising. Not exactly an accurate representation of a GP30, but I don't think it looks that bad really. At least not when you consider how old it is.

I just noticed an interesting thing about Lima's N scale stock - the couplers are smaller than standard rapido ones, but still work with them. Interesting.

I remember, especially the PINK N&W one!

It was well proportioned, a very nice shell for circa 1975.

The Atlas 0-4-0 shifter was actually a pretty neat little engine. I stuck an auxiliary tanker on the back, with electrical pickup. It let it cross longer switches easily.

All those Lima POS engines had the worst motor ever devised by man. It ran a scale 500MPH and burned out in a few minutes. How I remaine in N scale has to be considered either a miracle or a matter of a mental disorder. But it was fun just the same.

I had the Lima FP-40? that ran 500 MPH for about 20 seconds, then made a snapping noise and sat there vibrating like crazy.

I also have a Lima 0-4-0 diesel B&O switcher yeah the light blue one and it runs crazy fast. But its still not broken. Just keeps going and going like the energizer bunny. :D

Taking this one apart earlier tonight - I can see that the brushes melted the end cap of the motor... also Lima apparently thought they could get away without using any sort of bushings to hold the motor shaft in place. The shaft simply runs on the plastic! Not even Mehano was that cheap!
