    Hi all,
I recently bought a new Atlas GP38-2 and loved the way it runs so much that I want to get another one. The only trouble is that all I can find is the same road number as the one I have! So I'm wondering how hard it would be to renumber it to something appropriate. I think I can handle the exterior decals but I haven't even had the shell off mine to see how difficult it would be to renumber the lighted number boards. Anyone ever do this? Any tips?

Pine Sol with a little elbow grease takes off Atlas' printing relatively easy. And it smells nice, so anyone else in the house won't complain!

John Sing has an excellent tutorial on making numberboards out of self adhesive address labels cut to size.

Do you want the numberboards to still light up?
If not, then, depending on what color is used under the numbers in the numberboards, just paint over the existing numbers with that color and add new decal numbers. You don't even have to take the loco apart to do it.

    New Number Boards

As a follow-on to what others have noted, it's not too hard to remove the factory-painted numbers. If you want the number boards to light, remove the old numbers and get clear-backed decals with the desired numbers on them and apply those in place of the old numbers. That should take care of your issue. You may have more of a challenge with re-numbering the painted surfaces on the locomotive and making the new numbers match.
