I've seen HO models of Zebra striped GP-7's with the roof mounted air reservoirs... did the ATSF actually have any "torpedo boat" passenger GP-7's??
Yes. They were dual service freight and passenger locomotives with steam boilers in the short high hood. They had extra water tanks below for the steam so had to move the air reservoirs to the roof. The "Torpedo" geeps numbered 2650-2654 and 2848, had steam generators taken out of FT B units. GP7s 2879-2893 were delivered from EMD with the steam boilers already installed.
From Worley's 'Iron Horses of the Santa Fe Trail" 2650-2564 (10/1950) & 2879-2893 (11-12/1953) had steam boilers for local passenger service. The 1st group had the roof mounted air tanks but no dynamic brakes. The last group had dynamics but no roof mounted tanks. They all came w/ zebra stripes but by early '60s were painted pin stripe. The 1st group worked out of Los Angeles w/ the last group working back east. By the '60s they all worked freight when local passenger service was discontinued.
