Hello all, Many of you know Wayne Shortman from train shows or other contact. He was a founding member of Northern New Jersey N-trak, worked for Atlas Customer Service for 13 years and then for DeLuxe for a couple years after he retired from Atlas. He was also very active in the layout design SIG. Wayne passed away on Friday, November 5, 2010. He will be missed by many. If you are in the area and want to attend the wake: Thursday 11/11/2010 7-9 pm Browning Forshay Funeral Home 557 Lafayette Avenue Hawthorne, NJ 07506 The family asks that in lieu of flowers a donation be made in his name to the ALS Foundation. Please send donations to: The ALS Foundation National Donation Processing Center (R10M) P.O. Box 8178 Pueblo, CO 81008-9954 Respectfully, Dave Ferrari
I am saddened to hear this. ALS is a tough disease. I knew Wayne personally, speaking with him in person, seeing him at shows, and seeing him at Deluxe. The last time I saw him, I had been speaking with him for almost 30 minutes when Dave came up behind me and said, “You know that is Wayne, Right?” I did not recognize the friend I once knew. His appearance, speech pattern, and even though process was all but gone, and he was just a shell of his former self. Wayne loved N-scale, was a collector (hoarder) and had a lot of Union Pacific stuff, which was another common link we had to talk about. I think he now is operating on Gods railroad now, where all the DCC programming is simple, the track work perfect, and everything we want to model is available. I will miss you Wayne…
I did not know him, but in so many years of the hobby, had heard the name. Condolences to his family. Boxcab E50
I too did not know this man whom everyone admired so much. He must have been one heck of a NICE guy, and probably always a civil word from him. I 'd like to add my general condolences as well. Reminds me that life is so short and that we really need to treat eveyone with dignity, kindness and respect. So, when I see sarcastic responses to posts it really makes me wonder what causes some folks to act like that ? For all should be humble as our day is coming too. I know I want to be remembered as a really nice guy, much like Wayne. If there is going to be a group donation from TrainBoard to ALS, count me in. Boxcab ? fatalxsunrider43
I'd not thought of the idea. Charlie would need to give an OK to the notion. Might be simplest to just send anything on our own. Unless....? Boxcab E50
A single donation from several or many members together would probably be better than several or many small donations. As long as it didn't turn into a headache.
I think it would be honorable and an opportunity for us to show our support as a collective group. And...would be easier for the ALS to process as well. I am willing to start it off with a $5.00 contribution. If BoxCab is willing to collect the funds via PayPal, send it in, and then present the certificate of mailing here or some kind of receipt. ALS would probably send some kind of written thank you back that could be posted here as well. Who's next, come on guys, this is for Wayne !!!!! fatalxsunrider43
Hmmm ! Troubles ? The only trouble I have had with PayPal is them taking their cut, but if you use the "personal" option, no fees are taken out. Besides that, it is the fastest way to get money from one to another. Now, I make my support contributions to Trainboard via PayPal, so I'd think we could make a ALS donation the same way. Just a thought. fatalxsunrider43
Charlie, Wayne didn't really get beyond the Yahoo Group emails, so no, he wasn't a member. The phone was his instrument of choice. Dave
Although I did not know him, I am happy to suppost the cause. As a physician, I consider ALS about the worst fate that can befall a human being and anything to further research into this terrible and not so uncommon disease is worthwhile. Richard.
Hi Richard ! It is nice to know that a physician is into N scale. It's small size certainly falls in line with a physicians need for a steady hand doing intricate work. One quick question Richard...do you think there is... or will be a cure for cancer within this decade ? fatalxsunrider43
If it looks like no one is able to do the collection of donations but wants to contribute, I would be more than happy to be the collections agent as long as I am approved by Admins here to do it. I will make my PayPal e-mail available to anyone who wants to make a donation. Once all the donations are in, I will get a United States Postal Money Order for the total amount of donations sent, and will post an image of it here or can send the image individually to each contributor before it is mailed to the foundation. We would need a deadline that contributions would need to be in by so that this was not an open ended process. I will need Charlie & Boxcab to give me approval first. You'all let me know, thanks ! fatalxsunrider43
