Sorry if this was covered before but I can't seem to find it on a search. What is the distance needed for 1) Two percent grade 2) Two an a half percent grade to climb 4 inches?

I seem to recall that I read somewhere that climbing 2 inches in ten feet equaled a 2% grade is that correct?

    Thanks

Here's how the maths work when calculating grades. 2% means that for every 100 units of length horizontally, the tracks will be going up 2 units. For example, you will need 200'' (16'8'') of track length in order to climb 4''.

As for the distance required in order to climb 4'' with a 2,5% grade, you will need 160'' (13'4'') of track.

    Hope that helps.

Train fan has it right. remember grade is in Percent or Per century or per 100.
So 2 percent is 2 per 100. 2.5% is 2.5 per 100. So if you want to climb four inches. That would take 200inches at 2% (2 per 100 is 4 per 200). 2.5% is a smidge harder to figure out
4"/2.5" will give you how many sets of 100 you need to do it.
    4/2.5 = 1.6
    1.6*100 = 160 inches. Or about 13' 3 1/3"
