I read somewhere recently that NS was going to convert / rebuild some units using the new EMD V8-710G3A ECO powerplants. I am guessing GP38-type cores, but they do have a lot of GP50's left.... Anyone got more details?

Yes, NS is currently rebuilding two GP22ECO/GPTBU (slug) sets. The GP22ECO units will be numbered in the NS 5900 series and the GPTBU slugs will be numbered in the NS 600 series. These units are being rebuilt from GP38AC and GP38 cores.

Thanks for the info... that is interesting that they are slug sets. I guess they won't mate with the new 700 series slugs? or just not enough 700's to go around?

The 600 series GPTBU's will be specifically setup for the GP22ECO units as masters. The rebuild program for the 700 series RP-E4C slugs is also ongoing.
