This weeks' theme? Weathering. From mild to wild, let's get dirty!!! critinchiken's B&O Hopper starts us off, with a mildly beaten car: Arizona Shortline ups the ante with a 1/96 scale (I never even heard of that scale) scratchbuilt boxcar, JRV112: Bobthebear's Bachmann Northern has been outfitted with a Richmond Controls lighting setup, and a shortened drawbar: That's the mild stuff--the wild stuff is up next! Stay tuned!cool:
Cont'd: That was mild. This is WILD! daniel_leavitt2000's WP000142 is a classic example of the rode hard and put up wet motive power seen today: bnsf dash 8 finishes us up with a fine specimen of modern railroading--the leased hopper that has passed hands from one road to another; Ex UP Covered Hopper: That's all for this week, folks! I think I need a shower now.....
That BNSF GE looks typical of most I've seen in the Super Fleet scheme- badly-faded paint that can't stand up to the wear & tear of operating, scorched spots from the fire belches..........looks like crap. Well done!
Hey, thanks for including my little Boxcar! 1:96 scale is, in this case 1/8n3, that is 1/8" scale narrow gauge running on 9mm (N gauge) track. In 1:96 N gauge scales out to about 34", close enough for some nifty narrow gauge possibilities. The weathering on the car was done with chalks and colored pencils.
critinchiken's B&O Hopper is just right! Not too heavy, and just enough to take away the plastic model look.
My thoughts precisely, Bob! The H2 MAC's are starting to look like this too. At last, the last time I saw one int he states about a year ago....
WOAH, STOP! That BNSF "model" was photographed at the Springfield Train Show and IS NOT MINE. Since it was brought up, here is the story. There is an N scaler that submits a plethora of entries every year into the Northeast N-Trak's Winterfest competition. Some of you may know who I am talking about. Some may not; it doesn’t really matter. I don't usually call out a bad model, but I believe that any competition requires entries to be above average. Folks, STENCIL PAINTS AND DULLCOTE ON WINDOW GLASS IS NOT AVANTE GARDE. These were my submissions: My kit bashed SW1500 My Alaska F7 (on permanent loan to local carrier Mass Central) I didn't even place in the competition. None of the best models from other modelers did. Just this poor excuse for over weathering. I would never have called out a modeler like this save for the fact he submitted it for a contest and public scrutiny. I would expect nothing less for me. The "voting" was done by N-Trakers, not by the general public; I really believe there was something off with the voting. The entire episode was a miserable experience. N-Trakers kept referring to my engine as an SW7, really guys? Someone smashed the front end of the F7 breaking several parts then gluing it together without notifying me. Never again.
This guy would not have passed step one with me. The model is a C44-9W, but the number is 506. Those were and still are B40-8Ws on the Santa Fe and BNSF. He could have at least gotten that right... I am not claiming to have terrific modeling skills by any means, but that is a detail that one should have correct. Your stuff did look a lot better. Have you thought about entering your models in any of the NMRA contests?
These are a couple of my "wildest" but when I looked, I found I didn't really have any "clean" rollingstock.....:tb-wink:
What debacle? Someone over-weathered something and put the wrong road number on it. It probably wasn't even a TrainBoard member.
I agree. I've seen that engine before. I thought it was nasty. I figured I could do better. So I started up again. Good choices Hemi.
