Ok my secret painter is out! Brian is one of my top 3 painters. He does awesome work with the super detailing too. I have quite a few examples of his work and they are all A+++++++++++++ Another member of TrainBoard is Hien Nguyen or Tin1197 who does awsome painting and can kitbash anything. He had a thread on converting a Kato SD70ACe to a SD70M-2 that was amazing a little while back here on TrainBoard. My other painters are not on TrainBorad so I am not sure I can post them directly.
There are many talented guys available, just realize that this will cost you a fair amount, and you will never get your money back out of it if you ever decide to sell it somewhere down the line. Thats the only drawback, this is MY opinion only. fatalxsunrider43
If you can find a good one in your area, take full advantage. We had a couple of them down here in soFla, and one never used a mask and now he is dead at a very early age, and the other is hard to find. Second, it seems that many hobby shops down here do not offer this service, as orders tend to be too specialized and decals and paints available make customers too hard to please-always something to complain about. As for me, I am a long time nationally ranked model car builder and yet I admire those who paint, decal, detail and weather trains and structures and stuff. I now do my own, and although OK I have some real doozies professionally painted which my stuff is pale in comparison, and pale to some of the work photo'ed here. It takes a knack to do it, it is generally unrewarding outside, by outsiders, but a real hoot if you do it yourself. Good luck in your search, and hope you find a good 'un. Ken "FloridaBoy" Willaman
note that if you can do your own decals, you can save a ton of cash. i am able to do my own decals and enjoy that over painting. i personally can paint my own locos but am too lazy haha. PMed you with a name.
Using a mask/ventilator is a must. I cannot imagine the grief a parent would feel losing a son to such an unnecessary condition. Especially if the parent/or wife was telling them over and over, protect youself. I am SO sorry, whoever this was. Oh my........ my heart breaks knowing this. fatalxsunrider43
same here. i LOVE the smell of acrylic paint (especially tamiya stuff) but regardless i always use a respirator (3m 5k series :thumbs_up. as i kid i always hand painted models w/o mask and had to go to the doctor due to a liver irritation that was caused probably by breathing in fumes.
fatalx, The guy I alluded to in my earlier post was a true sad story. He was a highly reputed model railroader around here, named Steve something, and hated his day job. He dreamed that he could get enough paint/repair etc to train business he could quit, and finally he achieved his goal. Stories abound how he would "burn the midnight oil" painting up locos and rolling stock and bragged he never used a mask. Too much lacquer, and his lungs died and early death. True loss....great guy. I have a couple of his locos I bought at auctions and swap meets and they are incomparable. Word to everyone, wear a mask when airbrushing:munhappy:!!!!! Ken "FloridaBoy" Willaman

That is truly a shame, nobody should die for simple things like that. I'm sure he's riding the rails in a better place, but.... I don't know what to say, that's just a darn shame. I've never been able to work with face gear on (claustrophobic?) so I leave my painting etc. to others, or do the little stuff outdoors, upwind. Even that I shouldn't do... I am chatting with a couple guys, found some good prices on the custom paint work (so much so I may get 3-4 engines done!) so I'll be pushing forward. I'll let you guys know how this goes, but for now- Let's make this a custom painted loco showoff thread. I'd love that, please share! And if you've got work by our departed, talented brother(s) let's have it. We should stick to constructive criticism and compliments on all the work, I like friendly threads. Cheers, -B
EMD F7A - I received your email and can send you some pics of my work. My user ID here on TB is JDG and I have posted a few things. My rates are pretty reasonable too. I can't say I have ever gone over $55 for a loco paint job. In my opinion you get a pretty good job for that price. I have never received one back. Thanks.
Jeff (JDG) does a great job painting and his rates are more than resonable; he should be charging more. I would not hesitate to use him.
