The bell and horns give it away from a long distance. I find the retired date for 1779 as being on December 13, 1990. http://www.greatnorthernempire.net/index2.htm?GNEGNDieselRosterGP9.htm Boxcab E50
I remember those SP trains running along the waterfront, downtown Seattle, along Alaskan Way. Made the Seattle Waterfront trolleys look tiny!! :teeth:
EB BN "Empire Builder" at Lowell, WA. We rode it over to Wenatchee, stayed until the WB came back to Edmonds where we lived. My Uncle took the pics as we rolled by!!
Whoever posted the comment about locomotives getting scrapped at Tacoma, take this post as my vote for you to post them! My BN photos are all posted at: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/
That would be me. I need to get down to my parents and get the photo album that the pictures are in and scan them. There is one picture of a GP 7 or 9, you can tell which because the entire long hood is gone. There are some covered wagons, SW, RS-11s and I cant remember what all. I think one of them was even SW-1 #1. I will make sure and heist the album from the train room next time I am down there.
Kurt, I wanted to comment on that SDP40 in BSB above... Rare catch! They only ordered 6 or 8 units! As for the deadline shots, I think it's odd tthat all those dead units are stored, but no stacks are capped.
I can't wait to see the 325 back in BSB!!! mg: When they get her finished, i gotta' go back there and check her, the "Hustle Muscle", and (hopefully) the NP SD45 that will be in NP black and yellow this summer!! Woot!! :teeth:
I'm sure the purists won't enjoy your family photos. For me they are great memory stirring devices. If you have more, please post! Boxcab E50
I wish I could make out the unit number on the SDP40, to see if it's the same one being restored! That would be cool!
Somebody commented once this was the "surge fleet" for I believe the midwest grain harvest. Northtown Yard in Mpls.
I remember the J. Simon and Sons scrapyard in Tacoma well. Lots of neat stuff ended up there. I photographed a lot of BN and UP there before and after scrapping. This line of ex-BN F-units 712/707/724/682 on 2-7-82 was parked right alongside the road. Brian Ambrose Renton, WA
