i notice MT rolling stock have two holes in the underbody for mounting coupler boxes. are they there to just position the coupler box to your liking? ie sticking way out, or 'close coupled'. ....... OR ....... is the closer-to-the-edge hole for a z scale coupler box? i would like to put z scale 905's on my n scale cars. will the pilot hole be the right size? please elaborate on your experience with this.

Yes,the Z scale coupler will work in the closer to the edge hole. The pilot hole will work with the Z scale screws. You may have to tap them, I don't know.

Take a look at the MT1027 coupler. You will note that the coupler box has a pin on it at the rear. The pin is to keep the coupler box from swiveling to one side or another.

The 1027 is the correct "standard" coupler for most MT rolling stock. You CAN use other couplers, but the "extra" hole you are seeing is for the pin in the 1027 coupler box.
