Hi Guy.. This has happened to me on other websites, just got an E-mail from Flash Blackman, but not from him,if you get an E-mail from any member here, but just a link,NO MESSAGE..DON'T OPEN IT!!!! I didn't,luckily,I recognized it,you'll get a virus, and a message from a very well meaning[they should drop dead..] anti virus software company telling you to send them $49.99 to protect you from them...
I'm seeing these hitting very heavily today in many places. Never know where they'll be spoofed from, as a couple months back I even received one pretending to be from myself!
What happens anymore is they can see who's sent you e-mails in the past and then they just spoof the e-mail. If you look at the headers, a lot of times, they're too stupid and the actual origin e-mail is in the header information. I've reported almost a dozen of them to the FBI. Dunno how many got caught, but I know most of them were actually here in the US, not overseas. Most cases, they were probably 13 or 14 year old malcontents that think it's funny.
That's exactly how I recognized it before I even looked at the message.Three or four of the names on the list were obviously women,[not terribly likely to be model RR's,LOL!!!] and nobody else I know besides Flash...Those links are a nightmare if you open them, you can't even access anything on your computer besides the stinking software add.Pretty sure it's them, nothing to do with teenagers.
Well, I'm not so popular as to be sending myself notes of admiration. As noted, message headers give them away. But they come from everywhere. Former Soviet union satellites, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Philippines, Vietnam, China. And the good old USA provides some real losers. You guys should see some of the idiotic stuff we scrape off here, before it hits our boards. And if you want to see a real mess, there is a pro football site that is just full of it- Some days you can't even find posts about the sport, amongst the garbage.
I know it too well. I'm a web designer, IT specialist, etc. and have been administering and moderating message boards forever (in Internet time terms, anyway). Scary what people are willing to do out there.
Odd - got two from people who I know are model railroader internet friends today - obviously making the rounds in our community! Beware!!!!
Yup. Going back a long ways here as well. Sometimes I think the simple mass emailings of twenty some years ago are a good memory.
They have hit a lot of people with AOL, SBC Global and Yahoo! accounts. These are the most susceptible. Yahoo! Groups accounts have also been hacked but usually all you have to do is change your password and you will be fine. As far as Antivirus goes I recommend AVG Free... very good.
Hmmm...Come to think of it,I belong to two Yahoo groups I get messages from every day, didn't get any today. There's a free anti virus called "Super Anti-Virus",works great after the fact. It was the only thing that would open my computer after it got infected the second time when I got a virus from a website, the first time,I got it from an E-mail,I ended up formatting it.Luckily,I had most of my stuff stored on Flash Drives.
I get these stupid things constantly from RC car racing websites I belong to,especially Dirt Oval.com.Some of the ones I get are from guys that haven't been on the sites for YEARS...
My Yahoo email was hacked a while back. I even formatted my computer and restored from backup, and still everybody in my address book got spam from "me". Turned out it was a trojan on my computer, and it was time delayed for 30 days before it started. So, every time I restored my computer from my backup, I was reloading the trojan. Very sneaky.
If you ever get an e-mail that you were not expecting that contains just a link, with no other content, don't click on it. Ever. It doesn't matter who it is from or what the link is.
I wonder if you have an Android phone flash, there has been a huge increase in SPAM applications that pull contacts and emails off your contact list.
Daniel: I don't know what type of phone I have. I usually keep it turned off and it doesn't have any emails in it as far as I know. No text messaging or internet connections either; it is just a basic cell phone. For the past two days I have been getting about 30 Dameon emailer no-contact messages a day. I am sure it is related to this. I just send them to the spam box. If all you train guys are getting these messages from me, I am sure it is somehow related to my email address listing. I use Thunderbird which seems to be normal. I expect it is related to my Yahoo AT&T provider mailbox. Maybe I should just delete all the email addresses in the Yahoo account?
Guys,If get a e-letter from me don't bother opening it and just delete it because it won't be from me. Always remember this if I want to contact you it will be by PM not e-mail. My computer is pretty well protected and I never had a virus because I don't open unsolicited e-mail and very careful on web surfing and keep my anti virus updated on a daily bases before I even go on line... Another strict rule is nobody uses my computer other then my son when he upgrades it. My kids are adults have have their own computers.
Over here, it's usually a note from someone in Nigeria, saying you've just won or inherited a large sum of money. Now, if you'll kindly send your bank details, the money can be transferred over [[To them, of course]] Regards, Pete Davies
Sheesh, I'm feeling left out. Then again, it could be my gmail filter is trashing them. Guess I've been lucky.
