I'm using two colors of Woodland Scenics grass. To me it looks too uniform and not realistic. I put down a base of earth colored fine foam. I did manipulate the fibers a little so they aren't all straight up. Other ideas?

    A couple suggestions...

Woodland Scenic's static grass is OK. I use it to create complimentary colors. But to get an uneven look consider checking out Scenicexpress and get yourself a variety of lengths and colors from a couple different manufacturers (I highly recommend the Scenic Express brand along with Silflor... Mix'em up and lay'em down.

Also consider casually dropping a little ground turf over the finished static grass to recreate weed-bunches.

When you see things from a distance, it will make the colors look more uniform anyway. So you'll maybe want to use more extremes in colors, even with some straw and brown mixed in. There should be other brands and sizes of static grass in smaller packages that can be mixed in to make the color look less uniform.

The ground in the picture is uniformly flat also to add to your perception of "not realistic". I agree that a couple of bare spots, small rocks or a bit of ground foam for other plants would help break up things here.

I don't know what effect you're looking for, but you can add more layers to get a rougher, wilder look. Dribble and spread glue in a few spots then shoot more grass.

Its looking good so far! You just need to add a little more than your two colors.

I suggest mixing some colors. Don't forget to add some golden & whiter fibers to simulate dead stalks. Just look at your average field next time you are out driving. Lots of variation.

Also try adding fine ground foam "overtop" to simulate weeds/etc.

Consider another pass or two with a diffent color or colors to statically "stack" some of the fibers end to end. I did this a little and got some nice random taller blades.

Also try "drybrushing" the initial glue layer rather than applying it as a solid layer. It gives nice random effects. It prevents the "lawn" appearance as well.

Try practicing on some foam first to see how you like it.

Also try making a second or even third pass with another color. I loaded some golden fibers after my greens and got some nice "dead patches". (Not really visible in the pictures).

Here are some examples from my layout (sorry for the bad picture taking):

Here is a river scene that show a second layer of golden fibers along the shores:

I've been doing research, not applied any yet, but I'll build on what's already been said, WS static grass is short (2mm) and generally only useful for a manicured look. As was said, hit up scenic express. Try Silflor, noch and heki. Get the longer grasses, 3mm and 4mm and mix them too.

All my research has suggested that WS hasn't quite nailed the Static grass product yet.

Your picture is a bit small, but I think it looks as good or better than the other examples in this thread.
