Hello fellow z scalers I have been a member here for a while but i havent really posted anything. Im a regular at ZCS but i enjoy bother sites. I do scratchbuilding for myself and others almost completely out of styrene but i aslo build wood trestles. The other people i know well from ZCS have nicknamed me "Mr. Styrene" because i have a touch for useing the material. I have been working on a grain elevator complex in Richmond VA for Ed Turner. This complex is very old and has a lot of history for the area. You will have to ask Ed what kind of history it has because he did alot of research about it before he asked me to help him. I have built the complex from useing 12 photos that Ed found online and by uesing satilite photos from different sites like Bing and Google. After i had the main buildings base structures done, Ed went and took a bunch of close up photos so i could get all the details as close as posssible. The photos i am posting are where i am done up to now. The foot print of the model is about 29" by 14" and 10" tall. Please feel free to ask any questions and i hope you enjoy the photos. Thank You! Fantastic! I really enjoy grain elevators. Well done! How did you get those windows? Are they cut from an N scale model?
Thanks for the comments. I am glad you guys have liked my work. Joe, The windows i used are really N scale windows from "Tichy Train Group". They have alot of items that will work for Z scale. The trick is to look at what size hole needs to be made to install the part and scale it out for z scale. Their web site gives you all the sizes for the parts they sell. Here is their address. http://www.tichytraingroup.com/ Thanks again Steve aka "Mr. Styrene"
It looks fantastic! I love huge complex structures like that, and wish we could see more! Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
Hold your horses there john,I still have some more detail to finish on Ed's complex then i'll get to yours. One thing i didnt state earlier was thatif you see parts that are square in my photos so far,its because all the parts or little building sections are not glued to each other yet. They are lose so Ed had an easier time painting. So they are just sitting on or next to each other. When i get the whole thing done, I will post better photos of the whole complex. When you say that you wish to see more Robert. Do you mean of this model or other large structures from more people? Thanks Steve aka "Mr. Styrene"
More of this model! It's eye candy for sure, and what I would like to see is it's progress as it's painted and placed on the layout or module. Of course I would also like to see more people tackle big projects like this too. I know firsthand how much work goes into a project like this, and although it seems daunting to most, I ask those who could pull it off to share their work with us. It's very inspiring! Great work Steve!
You're right Robert, this is very fun to watch come into existence. This project by Steve sure dwarfs anything we've seen of late. What a daunting task and all from photos that Ed provided. I'm very impressed. Fantastic work Steve. And I can't begin to imagine what the price tag would be on this project. I hope Ed has a Z scale gold mine hidden somewhere nearby. I'd sure like to try a large project too. I can scrounge up the money necessary to build something, and the talent....I probably have enough to fit the bill, but it's the time that is always of short supply. Anyone want to lend me some at low interest rate?
Steve has done a knock out job on this project. It has turned out far better than I ever imaged. I will definitely keep everyone posted as progress is made. It will probably be the beginning of summer or late spring before I am able to start. Once I get it in hand, the first task will be building the module for it. Not sure until I have it in hand what type of module. I do know one thing, the module will be quite large also. Loren – You know you have the z bug bad when you have to set up payment plans
You're right, I don't want to owe anyone any money so forget the payment plan method. Who would like to buy Karin's four cats? And don't tell her I have them out front with a 4-sale sign on their necks. And no, they will not work for food.
