The handrails are separate from the walkways on all of the units you mention

Once again, the railings are,as Johnh says, separate from the walkway. They use a clamshell mask to paint it,it's a two piece tool that covers all but the ends, which get sprayed, then the railing gets put into the walkway.ALL the Atlas locomotives that have painted railings have removable railings..

Is this a result of different "generations" of production? Interesting to actually see the difference.

Yes, the older models had the one piece arrangement. The GP40 used to until they tooled the GP38. I think now the ones that use the one piece are the GP7/9/15/30/35, U25B, RS1, SD7/9, and I think that is it (though I may be mistaken)

Oh sure, redesign the mold. That's free and easy.

Lets think of it this way. They keep rerunning the sane engine with no improvements. Probably tooling costs were made back in the first run. Then they rerun and increase the price. So on later runs there is no tooling or r&d costs. Bachmann has been running and rerunning some of their stuff for almost forty years but with improvements along the way.

Nah, not yet. It's the holidays for one. And, they don't reply to everything (and I don't expect them to) so I may not get a response regardless. Honestly, there's not really a response required...the idea was that if enough people let them know they're interested in this feature, then maybe they'll implement it.

Personally, all the GP7's I need have to be custom modified/painted anyway so I don't really have a dog in the hunt right now. There are a few schemes I would buy if made available, and if they happen to hit then I'd love for them to have painted endrails.

I had hoped that Atlas would be at WGH in Fort Worth next weekend but they aren't on the exhibitor list.
