I am mulling over trying to tackle painting of the EMD/Caterpillar demo SD70ACe. The yellow paint used on the loco looks to be Caterpillar yellow. I normally utilize acrylic paints. Any suggestion out there for matching this yellow paint? How close would TTX yellow be? Thanks. Jeff
New Caterpillar Yellow is a little deeper and warmer than TTX yellow. Reefer Yellow and UP Armour Yellow are both pretty close. Or you could add a few drops of orange to the TTX yellow. There used to be a good color matching web site, but I can't find it now.
I imagine there has to be somewhere that you could get actual Cat paint. Maybe some Cat touch up paint? If you can find a Cat dealer near you, you might be able to get some paint.
Most farm supply stores, like TSC, have Caterpillar yellow, among most other farm machinery related paints.
Well I know the codes - RGB - 229, 173, 64 CMYK - 10, 33, 88, 0 Too bad I don't have a way to mix it?
I'll check the formula used for the Caterpillar Progress Rail unit and compare it to an actual Caterpillar Yellow color standard since I have access to both of these items where I work. Scott
If you have a CAT dealer in your area, go to the parts dept and get a spray can of CAT yellow. I did this when I painted a GHQ D8 CAT. The unfortunate thing is it only comes in a spray can or in pints. So I ended up saying some paint into a Dixie cup and then dumping that into a 1oz paint jar to spray it with my airbrush.
I used accu-flex Northern Pacific yellow. It's very close. also very close to the paint on the little tractors from NORSCOT.
I have compared formulas and color chips for CAT Yellow and UP Yellow. They are not even close to the same color. CAT Yellow is a much darker/dirtier yellow color. I scanned actual paint color panels of each color side by side for comparison and will try to upload this file. The CAT Yellow color used on the Progress Rail CAT unit is a good match to CAT Yellow. I was able to check the color of the batch of paint used for the Progress Rail unit versus an official Caterpillar Yellow color standard and can verify it is a good color match. Scott
I would assume you are talking about "new" CAT yellow vs "old" CAT yellow? There are 2 different formulas. "Old" CAT yellow is more dingy dull compared to "new" CAT yellow which is more of a brighter yellow. The $$$$ for "new" CAT yellow is also ALOT cheaper compared to "old" CAT yellow.
I am not sure what old CAT Yellow looked like. I'm assuming the old CAT yellow was the one made made many years ago using chrome pigments. I believe this was a bighter yellow color than the current CAT yellow. The Progress Rail unit matches the color of the current CAT yellow. I would assume the current yellow would be new CAT Yellow, since this is the color that is currently used by Caterpillar. I am directly involved in formulating the paint currently supplied to several Caterpillar facilities. Scott
Here is a link with some photos on it that shows the difference between "new" CAT yellow and "old" CAT yellow. The photos of the first couple pieces of equipment are "new" CAT yellow. The D8 about 1/2 way down the page is "old" CAT yellow. http://forums.dhsdiecast.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=126344
