I just posted this on my blog a moment ago. Thought I would share here too. This is hopefully the first of many truck models that I plan to design for my truck fleet. http://nscaleaddiction.blogspot.com/2013/03/3d-printed-379-pete.html HuskerN www.nscaleaddiction.blogspot.com
Love it... give us the link to the Shapeways page so we can look at it an 'likely' buy some. I think the PB-359/379 were in the late 1960' to early 1970' time period... but I have I hard time determining for sure. I've looked at some webpages listing PB and other trucks which seem to indicate these were competing against the Mack R of the 1960's to early 1970's. http://timstrucks.site.aplus.net/PB.htm
As far as era, the 379 replaced the 359 in the late 80's, and the current model 389 replaced the 379 just about 5 years ago. I model in the modern era, so while the GHQ model is a 359, and still very suitable for grain trucks, the 379 is a better pick for me. So while the 379 is out of production, it is still an 80's/90's truck and still on the road today The 389 has the same long straight traditional hood like the 359 and 379, so that style is still very common on the road currently. here is my shop, although my intent is to finish at least one model before making public, so that I can validate my design, and also provide illustrations of the final product. My grain trailers are available now. The bottom dump is being printed now, and I hope to paint some 50' grain trailer versions soon. http://www.shapeways.com/shops/NScaleAddict
As soon as I can get these two models cleaned up, painted and assembled, I plan to make them available. I just want to make sure the completed model meets my expectation. I am already looking at other truck designs, including Kenworth. HuskerN
If you need photos and/or measurements for an "A" model KW W900, let me know. My grandad has about 2 dozen of them in various states of shape at his truck shop. Ryan
When will these be available on Shapeways? I want to toss one of these in with my New Flyer bus order from Alex.
I can make these available now, but wanted to get one completed with paint, or at least primer before I do. This is a new design and my very first print of it, so I don't want to rush it. As far as cost to produce, I used free software and a fair amount of time. There was really no cost until I ordered it from Shapeways. That is what is so great about 3d printing. HuskerN
You aught to start making Truck detail parts. Fuel tanks, Different length frames, Tag axles, Wheels, etc. OOH replacement frames for Concor trucks.
My pet peeve is the lack of a glass. I certainly like the open window idea but could you make a separate insert out of clear for the glass? I certainly would be in for these if I had a glass insert.
Simple! You know MTL has these clear packaging that their couplers are packed in right? Well cut the clear packaging with an exacto to fit the area in which you want to put your windows in. Problem solved. And the best part is. ITS CHEAP!!!!!!
Yea...clear styrene, the packaging material listed above....so many very easy fixes for the glass insert. I wouldnt pass these up for something that small.
Here are a couple more photos. I want to make a couple of tweaks to the design to thicken some areas for better integrity, then order some more to see how they turn out. I also plan to modify the frame design for a tractor version in the near future to pull my grain and other trailers. HuskerN www.nscaleaddiction.blogspot.com
I'm in for the grain tractors for sure. I was already thinking all I would need to do is cut off the frame right behind the 2nd dual.
