Well I continued my tradition of having locomotives on my layout for no other reason than I like them. Will probably never be a believable reason for a UP DD40AX to turn up in the wilds of Kentucky or West Virginia... except maybe to join it's Gas Turbine cousin?

So I finally bit the bullet and sprung for a new Bmann DD40AX (yes the Athearn Genesis is a little better but the price makes it a non-starter). I had an experience with the first Bachmann DD40AX (the one with the single powered truck) that was dismal at best, but DANG I like those locomotives. Anyone else have one of these? If you don't like it I don't want to know ;)

I have one of the newer ones with Dcc/DC and i am very pleased with it. Runs smooth and quiet. Love the blinking light. I took a small piece of shrink tube around the base of the blinking led and looks better.

Well it came in today and it did not disappoint! Smooth and quiet as you said. A far cry from the first Bachmann DD40AX with the single powered truck. I'm enjoying running it even on my 22" curves, and looking forward to running it on larger ones (someday!). I like the blinking light too, will have to try that shrink wrap trick.
A couple years ago I had some non-running DD40AX train show refugees that I kitbashed into a dummy DD40B. Although a fantasy unit, it turned out pretty well, and it's fun to see it lashed up to an A unit now. Lots of power there
