I am unable to program a new address for a Kato FL12 railcar decoder (in this case a VRE railcar number). Many attempts were made "on the main" and "on the programming track." I have programmed hundreds of addresses on my NCE 5 amp ProCab system over the past 5 years and have never had this problem. The Kato "instructions" say I can program addresses from (01 to 9983) but all I get is "3" over and over again.

Anybody have this experience and/or figured out how to do it?

    Thanks in advance.

What's the actual number number you're trying to program into it?
Are you using 2 digit or 4 digit addressing?

Yeah..... I had a similar problem some time ago. ...
I found that the FL12 in NOT able to support extended address. .. so you'll have to try a short address, 1 to 99 or 128

I was trying to program 712 one of the cab forward railcars on VRE. I notice someone else has had the same problem. Seems that despite the declaration in the FL12 instructions, it actually doesn't seem to support extended addressing!

More information….. "On the main," it will not program the short address "12." So "3" it is!!

Odd, I've installed FL12s into my one of my Kato bullet trains under address 1000 and it took it just fine. I also know several others who have used 4 digit on these decoders without problems.

Is there a difference between the DCC system being used. ...

Not sure if this is your problem but it's something you might try. Most DCC decoder will not accept programming without a motor connected. I have some sound only MRC DCC decoders, the way I program them is I just place a DCC loco on the programming track with the sound only DCC loco.

I have had no issues, with a Digitrax Zephyr, programming "914" into my CalTrain cars that use the FL12. I do use a Soundtraxx PTB100 programming booster

Note: You cannot program 4-digit addresses into the FL12 using Decoder Pro -- the profile for the decoder assumes only 2-digit addressing

I used a Digitrax DB150 to do mine.
